The investigation of personal traits in terms of adopted gender roles in females

This study is aimed at investigating of individuals' personality traits in terms of gender roles they adopted. In this direction, it was investigated that to what extent can individuals' gender roles predict their personality traits. The sample of research contains 239 female participants living in İstanbul, whose ages varying from 20 to 36. Personality traits of participants were measured by The Five-Factor Personality Inventory (FFPI) and their perceptions about their own gender roles were measured by The Bem Sex-Role Inventory (BSRI). The Five-Factor Personality Inventory (FFPI) and The Bem Sex-Role Inventory (BSRI) were used as measurement devices. In consequence of reasearch, the differences between personality traits in terms of adopted gender roles are defined. In general, the women adopting feminine gender roles have higher scores in tolerance, calmness, agreeableness, reconciliation, emotional instability, lack of self-confidence; masculine women have higher scores in extraversion, assertiveness and sensation seeking, however they have lower scores in agreeableness, reconciliation, calmness, tolerance. The women adopting androgen gender roles have higher scores than women adopting other gender roles in conscientiousness, agreeableness, orderliness, analytical thinking, sensivity subdimensions; on the other hand, these women have lower scores in lack of self-confidence. Consequently some personality traits in the gender roles that are adopted independent from sexualities are also defined. Out of female and masculine discrimination, working is an important argument showing that sexuality affects personality traits in respect of adopted roles.
