Abstract (EN)

Background: Finding lifestyle interventions and alternative treatments in the fight against obesity helps to prevent the health problems created by this epidemic. This study investigated the effects of diet, exercise, and vagus nerve stimulation methods on body composition, functional capacity, and blood parameters in the short term. Methods: This study was also performed on obese individuals (N:90) classified as Stage I, II, and III. Laboratory measurements and self-evaluations of individuals in the Diet, Exercise, and Vagus Nerve Stimulation group were compared. Functional capacity (eg, 6-minute walk test), muscle strength (eg, handgrip strength test; five-time sit-and-stand test such as), food choice (eg, FCQ such as), and quality of life (eg, SF-36 such as) In addition to changes in anthropometric characteristics were recorded. Results: A weight loss of 4%-10% of total body weight during the weight loss process can improve body composition, glycemia, blood lipids, blood pressure, functional activity, and quality of life. When the parameters and tests examined in the study were concerned, it was observed that although there were no statistical differences between the groups (p > 0,05), they positively affected general health in all 3 groups. Although there is a numerical difference in weight loss, it can be said that the observation of such a situation is the effect of the body component ratios of the weight loss. Conclusion: Among the 3 alternative weight loss methods that we have examined in the short term, diet, exercise, and vagus nerve stimulation methods can be used as alternatives in the weight loss process. By stimulating the neurohormonal mechanism with auricular vagus nerve stimulation, behavioral change can be created in terms of appetite/food choice orientation. Thus, it can be predicted that weight loss can be achieved in the short term without any diet or exercise. Short and long-term academic research is needed.
