Examining the effect of reading engagement model on primary school 4. grade students' reading habits, attitudes and motivation towards reading

In this study, which aims to determine the effect of the use of the Reading Engagement Model in the primary school fourth grade Turkish lesson on students' gaining reading habits, their attitudes and motivations towards reading, semi-experimental design with pretest-posttest control group, which is one of the quantitative research methods, was used. The sample of the research consists of 36 fourth grade students studying in a primary school in the central district of Nevşehir province in the 2021-2022 academic year. These students were divided into two groups by random placement method. The experimental group consists of 19 students and the control group consists of 17 students. The data of the study were collected using Reading Attitude Scale, Reading Motivation Scale and Reading Habit Scale. Statistical tests used in comparisons between groups were used in the analysis of the data. The collected data were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U test, one of the non-parametric tests, since it didn't show a normal distribution. In the experimental process, the pre-test was applied first and according to these pre-test data, it was seen that there was no significant difference between the levels of reading attitude, reading motivation and reading habit of the experimental and control groups. Afterwards the, activities prepared by taking expert opinion according to the principles of Reading Engagement Model were applied to the experimental group for four weeks. As a result of the application, past-tests were applied to determine the reading attitude, reading motivation and reading habit levels of the students in both groups. As a result of the analysis, the students post-test reading attitude avarage scores (Mann-Whitney U=46,50; p<.05), reading motivation avarage scores (Mann-Whitney U=17,50; p<.05) and reading habit avarage scores (Mann-Whitney U=22,00; p<.05) differed significontly in favor of the experimental group were seen. In other words, the activities prepared using the Reading Engagement Model significantly increased students' reading habit levels. Itcan be said that this result is important in terms of develoging reading attitude, reading motivation and reading habit from early ages, which is seen as an important problem for our country as well.
