Analysing of internet addiction of pre-adolescents in terms of loneliness, social skills and some socio-demographic variables

This research aims to search how a relationship shows loneliness, social skills (positive social behaviors, negative social behaviors) and some socio-demographic variables (sex, academic success, socio economic level, the class level of student), of the internet addiction in pre-adolescents. This research is an attribute of a descriptive and relational screening model study. The research has been carried out with 1063 primary school students who keep on 6th, 7th and 8th grades. The data related to internet addiction of students have been got by using "Internet Addiction Scale" which has been improved by Young (1996) and made the working of adapting to Turkish by Bayraktar (2001); the data related to social skills (positive social behaviors, negative social behaviors) have been got by using "Matson Evaluation of Social Skills With Youngsters " which has been improved by Rotatory and Hessel (1983) and adapted to Turkish by Erdoğan and Bacanlı; the data related to loneliness levels have been got by using "UCLA Loneliness Scale" that has been improved by Russel vd. (1980) and adapted to Turkish by Demir (1989); finally the data about some socio-demographic variables and using internet of students have been got by using "Personal Info Form" which has been designed by the researcher. "SPSS 20.0" statistics program is used for all analysing datas in this research. Frequency and percentage calculations, non-parametric techniques of Spearman's Rank Correlation Coefficient, Mann-Whitney U Test and Kruskal Wallis H Test were used in analyzing the data. As to the findings which have been got by research; %93 of the sample those who showed no symptoms, %6 those who showed limited symptom (those who probable dependent or likely to be at risk) and %1 has been identified as an internet addicted. When it is looked the purposes of using internet the %78 of students, to search about the school, %65 to play games, %53 to watch movies, %50 to use social networking web sites, %44,1 to appraise the spare time, %I7,6 surfing on internet pages. The students use internet for a lot of purposes. There has been found that pre-adolescents show no significant relationship between Internet addiction points and loneliness level however, they show a significant relationship with social skill evaluation bottom criterion. It has been arrived the result that there is a negative significant level relationship between internet addiction points and positive social behaviors of the students and it's been arrived the result of there is a positive significant level relationship between negative social behavior. Any differentiation could not be fixed of the families of pre-adolescents to limit using internet or not while the internet addiction points of pre-adolescents differentiate significant as statistics; their sex, academic success levels, income level of family, class levels, daily internet using time and to be a member of social networking sites or not.
