Abstract (EN)

Cinema, as the seventh art, has been in a dynamic relationship with architecture since its existence. While examining this relationship in this study, space, which is the common denominator of cinema and architecture, is discussed. The ways of using the common basic design tools of these two disciplines and their production stages are analyzed by comparing them with examples. Firstly, space is examined conceptually, then the types of space, real and fictional, and the scale of the use of space in cinema are examined in the context of the contribution of spatial features such as color, light, texture and form to the film narrative, story and character development. Three directors with a characteristic cinematography who attach importance to space design in their films and use space effectively in film narrative and two films belonging to each of them were selected. These are Alfred Hitchcock (Rear Window and Psycho), Stanley Kubrick (2001; A Space Odyssey and The Shining) and Wes Anderson (The Grand Budapest Hotel and The French Dispatch). First, the time flow charts of these films are obtained in detail and then these charts are given in the appendix. Then, the cinematographies of the directors are presented, then the selected films are analyzed sociologically and detailed space analyses are qualitatively examined through the visuals taken from the films under the titles of color, light-shadow, texture-form, movement-experience, time-space, montage, frame-frame and script-storyboard. In these analyses, interviews of the directors, academic studies on this subject and film readings were utilized. Finally, with the data obtained as a result of the analysis, alternative spaces reflecting the spatial design characters of the directors were experimentally generated through an artificial intelligence program called Midjourney. In the conclusion section, the data obtained as a result of the analysis is transferred to a table where the three directors can be compared. The study aims to improve the ability of people interested in architecture and cinema to read film and space and to offer an alternative method to the architectural design process.
