The aesthetic existence of feeling of disgust in the cinema

The art of cinema, which has been in our lives for more than a hundred years, includes many of our daily experiences and acquisitions. In addition, as a result of the themes they deal with, movies contain many emotions such as happiness, sadness, fear, tension, excitement and disgust. The aim of this study is to identify the elements that provide the feeling of disgust, one of the emotions we frequently encounter in movies, and to question the aesthetic existence of these elements in cinema. In addition, the contribution of disgusting elements that cause the feeling of disgust to motion pictures is also included in the scope of the study. In the first part of the study, theoretical information about the concept of disgusting was given, and the beliefs about the structure of the feeling of disgust and the conditions under which it occurs were put forward. As a result of the literature review, it was concluded that objects that arouse disgust are categorized according to their forms. This categorization study belongs to the British theorist Colin McGinn. In this section, in addition to McGinn's research, the work of Bulgarian psychoanalyst Julia Kristeva, who has produced many studies on the disgusting object, was also taken into consideration. The concept of "abject", which Kristeva frequently emphasizes, sheds light on the literature on the feeling of disgust, which is the subject of this study. In the second part of the study, theoretical studies on the emotion of disgust are included. This section includes the analysis of the emotion of disgust in line with the basic theories about emotions. The aim of the section is to provide detailed theoretical information about the structure of the emotion of disgust before analyzing the selected films. In the third chapter, the last part of the study, the concept of aesthetics is mentioned and general information about the development of aesthetics in cinema is given. Two sample films selected in the light of the literature review are analyzed in this section. The scenes selected from these films, which contain many different types of disgusting elements, were analyzed by phenomenological analysis method. Answers to questions such as what are the disgusting elements in the scenes, how these elements provide disgust, whether the disgusting elements are obvious or not, and to what extent the cinematography created by the director affects the feeling of disgust were sought.
