The investigation of the social participation skills in the social studies curriculas (1968-2018)

The aim of this research is to examine the place of social participation skills in the social studies curricula published between 1968-2018. This research was carried out by the document analysis technique method, one of the qualitative research methods. The documents of the research were consisted of 1968 Primary School, 1970 Secondary School, 1998 and 2005 Primary School and 2018 Primary and Secondary Social Studies Curricula. The data were analyzed by descriptive analysis and content analysis techniques. According to the results of the research, social participation skills in social studies curricula were included for the first time in the 2005 program as one of the social skills courses, and they kept their place in 2018 program. Despite the absence of this concept directly in the pre-2005 programs, the statements or examples assessed in social participation skills were included. For the general purposes in all programs, the dimensions of social participation as 'participation for effective citizenship and participation for social participation' have been identified. It has been found that in the units in all the social studies programs examined there has been a social participation ability even though the percentage changes within the years. In the social studies program of 1968, 1970 and 1998 there were no separate titles for educational situations and examples of activities, so no recommendations were made for the acquisition of goals related to social participation skills. However, in these three programs, the educational situations recommended for all courses were indicated, and these expressions included methods and techniques that fell within the skills of social participation. In the 2005 social studies program the educational situation and the examples of activities were mentioned and the social participation skills in the activity examples as "working with the group, cooperation, social organizations, addressing a problem, participating in the activities inside and outside the school, democracy, election, to be elected, rights, freedom and assignments" concepts have been discussed. Proposals for the assessment of social participation skills were included only in the 2005 social studies program.
