Abstract (EN)

In this thesis study, Tunar's understanding of composition has been examined, based on the instrumental works composed by Şükrü Tunar, one of the important music people of Classical Turkish Music. In the first chapter, information on Şükrü Tunar's life and the forms of the works examined were given, afterwards, Şükrü Tunar's Acemaşiran Instrumental Semai and Hicaz Traditional Dance Music were examined as a 'close look' to form, melody-maqam, rhythm and sentences. As data, two instrumental pieces selected from Acemaşiran and Hicaz maqams, technically the compositional features of Şükrü Tunar, have been explained by analyzing the forms, melody-maqam and rhythms of the pieces. It has been understood that the composer did not search for new genres and forms in his instrumental works, he made choices appropriate for his own era, and composed a great number of play tones. When the analyzes have been taken into account in terms of structure, it has been seen that he generates a compositional expression by frequently using multiple structural components (sentence or sentence fragment repetition, formation, motif development) in his works. Especially in the Hijaz Traditional Dance Music, there are lots of sequelae. The multiplicity of these similar pieces indicates that the composer had certain musical ideas to use in his composition, which he created by thinking or improvising. It has been observed that the composer uses the maqam, rhythm features, choice of method and the rhythmic structure of the works in accordance with the choices in his period. This study aims to examine Şükrü Tunar's instrumental works in detail in terms of structure, melody and rhythm, and it is considered that these characteristics of today's instrumental composers can also be used. Keywords: Analysis, Instrumental work, Şükrü Tunar
