According to the Turkish press, unified efforts on the left (from the coup of 12 september 1980 to the elections of october 20, 1991)

In systems governed by democracy, polyphony based on political parties is the essen-tial element. In the multi-party period in Turkey, the basic principles of democracy were sometimes violated by the government and sometimes by the military wing. But the system was able to survive according to the conditions. Especially the transition to multi-party life has been very painful. While attempts to transition to a multi-party system were unsuccess-ful in the period of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, it was only in 1945 that a multi-party system could be adopted in the period of İsmet İnönü. Left parties founded in 1945 and later were seen as a threat with Turkey's approach to the Western bloc in foreign policy. At this stage, the Republican People's Party, which was the official organ of the state, also paved the way for the left-leaning parties to be closed down by the judiciary itself. This situation did not change after the CHP gave the power to the Democrat Party in 1950. On the other hand, after the May 27, 1960 coup, the establishment and operation of leftist parties became effective in the liberal environment given by the 1961 Constitution, and the Workers' Party of Turkey made a great leap forward in the left. Under these conditions, the Republican People's Party shifted itself to the left-of-center strategy in 1965 and expressed its new position in domes-tic politics. With İsmet İnönü's resignation of the seat of CHP to the new chairman, Bülent Ecevit, the definition of the left has also expanded. However, other leftist parties could not show great success at this stage. The coup of September 12, 1980 was a complete destruction for the left and the left movement experienced divisions within itself. This division has so-metimes resulted in the unification of left parties, and sometimes with separations that are far from even the basic principles. In this study, the process of unification, integration and disintegration of the left that was divided after the September 12, 1980 coup d'état was examined by considering the periodicals of the period, Cumhuriyet, Hürriyet, Milliyet and Tercüman, and Yankı magazine.
