Harmonization Laws and constitutional transformation during the European Union process of Turkey

With the idea of westernization which was embraced from the early years of our republic made Turkey turn its face to the coalitions that has been happening in Europe and the membership of The Council of Europe, North Atlantic Treaty Organization and the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development was followed by the full membership of European Economic Community in 1959 which is the foundation of the European Union. Full membership stipulations for European Union requires some economic and political criteria on the basis of Copenhagen Criteria and in this sense, it establishes the ground for the legal transformation efforts that will occur in Turkey.In this study, legal and constitutional changes that have been happening through the process of Turkey's membership efforts will be dealt in detail. At the same, time it would be right to evaluate these innovations in Turkey in terms of fundamental rights, freedom and democracy. This process which has recently gained acceleration in Turkey creates possibilities for the forming of a more liberal, egalitarian and democratic basis. This assertion is the main idea of the study.On the first part of the thesis, the formation process of the European Union and on the second part; the history of the relations between Turkey and the EU is being studied. On the third and the last part, through this process, the necessity of the adapted transformations in Turkey due to the Maastricht and Copenhagen criteria, reform packages that were put into practice and the constitutional amendments are being examined.Key Words: European Union, Laws of Harmonization, Turkey, Relations between Turkey-EU, Reform packages.
