The impact of design studio's seating elements on the creative performance and the productivity of students

Seats that are used at home, at pre/middle/high schools, at universities, offices, and workshops were discussed and studied ergonomically, anthropometrically, and dimensionally by a huge number of researchers and scientists, we could find a huge data and studies that indicates the seat's problems, notions, essentials, and the seats standard dimensions, even these available data may be used to help us in choosing and selecting the right seat that is designed to support the activity we aim to do in different spaces. Hence, design studio seats were not discussed loudly by scientists and scholars before, and there is no authorized or published data that discussed the design studio seats, thus this thesis intended, and aimed to spot the light on the design studio's seats and their impact on the design student's creativity and productivity when performing a design work. For a design student, design studio work always encourages him/her to directly interact with any product and experience the users feeling, it encourages the design student to create, innovate and find solutions for design problems to improve product. Consequently, design studio is considered to be a tool of pedagogy that aims to teach design students to ideate, create, collaborate, and interact to innovate new products or projects, after getting the needed knowledge and critics. Introducing and discussing design students, design studio, and design studio education will be carried out throughout the content of the first chapter. As time goes by, using of a seats is longer limited to be used by the royal society. Seats have been a superior product design through different eras, the seat design passed in a historical and cultural revolution and evolution in its design and production. Thus, seats have different types, each is to designed to serve and support the body in different types of activities and spaces. Henceforth, further explanation will be addressed in the second part of this thesis. Seat's ergonomics is being a 'buzzy' word now a day, it means providing the seaters with the best facilities to enhance his/her level of performance and productivity while performing a work, while anthropometry addresses the physical ergonomics. Seat's ergonomics, anthropometry, and standard dimensions, discusses and find solutions that supports the human body with stating the guidelines for the human's healthcare in the workspace, that enhance the seated working human body to avoid risking health problems. Hence, design students physical and mental health problems in the design Page | IV studio was discussed as a root that may decrease their level of creative performance and productivity while working on a project in the design studio which is marked in the third chapter of this research. From the author's educational background in interior architecture and industrial design, the author researched design student's creative performance and productivity in the design studio as a collaborative, interactive, and educative workspace, that enhances design students to ideate, evaluate and experience the users feeling from an emotional behavior base. Yet, an evolutionary discussion showing the seating elements in design schools and workshops from around the world between the years 1905 and 2015 were obtained and analyzed in chapter four. A research which was assembled to two study types were implemented. In the first study type 6 different seats from 5 different design schools in Turkey were measured and analyzed. The second study type, was executed with a purposive sampling method, which was implemented in same 5 official/private universities in Turkey, between 125 subjects, surveying design student's ethically in order to evaluate their user experience, emotional behaviors, and health problems from using the seats they are using in the design studio they study and work inside, also a dimensional study resulting and showing the measured 6 seat's average dimension and were compared to the standard dimensions, showing the total differences dimensions between them that showed significant dimensional differences are carried out and showed throughout the content of chapter five and six Last but not least, the research and study's conclusion, discussion, limitations and recommendations for further studies were given in the last chapters.

Similarity or complimentarity between product design and consumer's body and its relationship with his/her behavior

The human being is made of three decisive elements, which they are known as spirit, soul and body. The individual, has two considerable aspects. The first one is the immaterial aspect (spiritual), and the second one is the material aspect (body). The consumer as a human being is the base of many marketing researches. This study addresses the consumer as a human being from a bodily perspective by reviewing the relationship between the body features of the consumer and the design features of the product. In other words, the relationship between the morphology of the body of the consumer and the shape of the product is investigated. For this study smartphone's shapes were selected as product examples and classified into three criteria, size criterion (large or small), width criterion (narrow or wide) and finally the criterion of roundness (angular or rounded). All these criteria have been distinguished to meet the possible consumer's body types ectomorph (linear or thin), mesomorph (not too thin and not too wid ) and endomorph (transversal or wide) with considering the sex of the consume , male or female. Through the development of a qualitative study, we have distinguished the presence of a "similarity" or "complementarity" between the consumer's body (based on the sex and the somatotype) and the preferred shape of the martphone (based on size, width and roundness criterion).

Innovation principles and their possible application in social design

This work examines the concepts of stressor (i.e. challenging conditions given by the environment, resources and knowledge level), antifragility, cumulative experience, context, simplicity, emergent platforms among others, as well as its possible application in product design, intended to solve or mitigate the effect of social problems. The document is divided into five chapters, being the first one devoted to the theoretical review of literature from four knowledge areas: Cultural, Scientific, Experimental and Logistic. In the second chapter, ideas and concepts from the different literature resources and knowledge areas are combined in the so-called Theoretical Triangulation Process, whose final aim is to generate statements based on the bibliographic review. The third chapter includes a further development of the statements reached in chapter two and from them, it is proposed a set of principles extracted from the literature review to promote technical innovation in social design. Chapter four includes a comparison between the suggested principles and those already developed in the existing design-related literature, identifying similarities, differences and opportunities so that a richest framework of innovation in social design conducted by institutions or organizations can be created. Finally, the fifth chapter presents the conclusions, challenges and possible opportunities for its application.

Endüstriyel tasarım süreçlerinde bulut tabanlı iş birliğine yönelik literatür taramasını takiben, sektörde faaliyet gösteren 10 firma ile nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden yarı yapılandırılmış görüşmeler yapılarak, teknolojinin tasarım süreçlerine etkisi üzerinden özellikle dijital teknolojilerdeki gelişmelerle birlikte endüstriyel tasarım alanında faaliyet gösteren firmaların tasarım ve iş akış süreçleri analiz edilmiştir.

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education aims to integrate diverse disciplines by making interdisciplinary collaboration in K-12 education. When we review the STEM training and course materials given to teachers in Turkey, it is observed that they mainly focus on science and mathematics, and remain insufficient for disciplines such as social sciences, Turkish, English or visual arts. This situation implies that teachers from diverse disciplines need to work collaboratively among themselves. Creative processes that prioritize the effective participation of students and the design methods that support these processes have been increasingly used for different purposes in education. From this perspective, design is one of the most significant areas that would contribute to interdisciplinary education. This study uses the "design thinking" (DT) approach for the development and implementation of STEM activities by secondary school teachers from various disciplines. The aim of the study is to investigate the effects of the DT approach on STEM education. To test the proposed DT approach developed within the scope of this study, one pilot and two main studies were carried out with teachers in 2017 and 2018. In the main studies, co-design workshops were organized with five 5th-grade teachers and one researcher-designer. In these workshops, teachers designed STEM activities and lessons for 5th-grade students by using the proposed DT approach. Then, STEM activities and lessons were implemented in the 5th-grade class of 16 students. The study documents the analysis and evaluation of data from co-design workshops, focus group, group interviews, individual interviews, mobile instant messaging, and observation. Findings from the study indicate that the implementation of the DT approach in STEM education presents solutions to the challenges of STEM education, including collaboration among teachers, integration of disciplines, and developing and implementing STEM activities appropriate to the learner level. This study also provides the proposed DT approach as a teachers' guide for developing and implementing STEM activities.

Ürün tasarımı eğitiminde kurgusal tasarımın farzetme senaryolarını kullanan fıctıonatıon fikir geliştirme aracı: Bir karma yöntem araştırması

Design process is an iterative activity that embodies research and planning, idea generation, evaluation and refinement, and finalization phases. Among these, idea generation is evaluated as having the highest impact on the quality of the final design solution since it is the phase that requires the generation of many (quantity), various (variety) and novel (novelty) ideas that will be further developed and resulted as the final product in the following phases of the design process. For the purpose of guiding and supporting designers in the design process and especially idea generation, various design methods and tools have been developed. However, these methods and tools are being criticized for 1) being ineffective in enhancing quantity, variety and novelty of the generated ideas, 2) not being experimentally tested by the researchers and 3) not being supported with illogical thinking, which is one of the essences of creative thinking. This thesis aims to identify the needs of the idea generation process and offer a strategy for design students in order to foster the outcomes of the idea generation process. For this purpose, a mixed method research was conducted. The needs of the idea generation process were identified through observation and peer debriefing, a design tool (Fictionation) that integrates design fiction into idea generation was created and further developed through a pilot study, and workshops that adopt a quasi-experimental research model was conducted. The findings were evaluated by using the assessment technique that was developed within this thesis and interviews. The results have shown that the Fictionation tool is promising in terms of fostering the outcomes of the idea generation process by increasing quantity, variety and novelty of the generated ideas and achieving an efficient learning and teaching environment within design education.

Internet of things (IoT) introduced some challenges as well as many opportunities for designers. Enhanced capabilities of the things transformed them from being passive assistants of humans to active agents that can collect and act on data. On the one hand, the emergence of new and more capable 'things' constitutes challenges for designers. Most of the studies are technology-driven, and the unprecedented experiences that designers cannot envision might result in disappointing experiences for users. On the other hand, the availability of data that is collected and used by the things provided a new source of information that designers might benefit in the early design process. The studies on the use of data collected from the things to develop new agents by designers are still emerging. This study aims at contributing to the design corpus by proposing a method for guiding designers in their design for the IoT process. This method proposes using sensor data collected from the connected things to create a design fiction prototype—an object persona from a thing-centred point of view. The method was developed through three workshops with designers. As a result of the iterative workshops, sensor data supported object persona creation was proposed for designers as an ideation method in the design for the IoT process. The effectiveness of the method was then evaluated with experts. The method was found to be effective in the ideation process in design for IoT as it helps designers envisioning potential interactions of agents with users, with other agents, and with the environment.

Design students are often engaged with future contexts, as design education encourages them to explore different contexts and understand the implications of their activities. These explorations are done in what is called a fuzzy front-end in design, which stands for the chaotic but fruitful early phase of a design process. There are different apporaches used by design students to conduct research and increase immersion into the context in this phase. Approaches such as design scenarios, make use of fictional information in addition to factual, in order to increase immersion into context and help design students generate inferential insights. This creates both epistemological and practical challenges in terms of how to define and utilize fiction within the early phases of design. This study draws from the existing literature to utilize world building in this phase. Through action research, three workshops were conducted with design students to generate a theoretical model for presenting how world building is utilized in design education, contributing to the design literature. Furthermore, the toolset devised for use in these workshops is iterated throughout the study based on the insights from the theoretical model, and is presented as a practical contribution to the design education literature. Based on the results, this study presents a case for how world building in design education is carried out in waves of speculation for creating textual reference worlds, and assessment for comparing these speculations with actuality through pragmatic concerns.

Çocukların protez ortak tasarım araç seti: Üretken tasarım araçları yoluyla çocukların el protezleri ihtiyaçlarını ortaya çıkarma

When designing assistive devices for children with disabilities, designers mostly consider technical and functional aspects and overlook factors that affect their usage from children's perspective. Therefore, in most cases, assistive devices do not fully meet the needs of the children and may create a negative effect on children's well-being. To explore the opinions of children using 3D printed hand prosthetics in Turkey, individual co-design sessions were conducted with four children with upper limb deficiency. Generative tools are used to engage children and encourage them to express themselves in relation to prosthesis use. The main aim was to investigate how children provide design relevant information that may help designers to achieve improved assistive devices that support children's physical, emotional and social wellbeing. Children's feedback related to prosthetic usage categorized under three topics; (i) daily prosthesis needs of children, (ii) prosthesis design expectations by children and (iii) children's priorities for the expectations related to prosthesis usage. The findings are argued to be useful and usable by NGOs, product designers and design researchers who work with children with disabilities.

Kendi kendine meme muayenesinde pozitif deneyim için tasarım: mobil sağlık uygulamalarına yönelik bir araştırma

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancer types among women, responsible for approximately 627,000 deaths globally in 2018. There are various screening methods to detect cancer early, and experts suggest that women should perform breast self-examination (BSE) once a month. Unfortunately, most women fail to do so even if they are aware of the risks and the importance of screening methods. Moreover, developments in technology provide people to manage their own health in their own environments with various mobile technologies. Particularly, a number of mobile apps have been developed for assisting women to maintain breast healthcare; but, they fall short to be insufficient to meet needs of women for BSE. Even though there are studies that explored breast health behavior of women, the researcher has not come across a detailed investigation regarding the relation of breast health behavior and related mobile apps. An in-depth investigation of experiences with BSE and mobile apps can give insights into behavior of women. Therefore, the aims of the thesis were to uncover i) motivations behind women to perform BSE, ii) to figure out women's needs to perform BSE, and iii) to recommend ways to enhance women's BSE experiences through the BSE apps. With this aim, three selected mobile BSE apps were used by a total of 24 participants for four weeks. A three-phase study was carried out to uncover pre-usage, during-usage, and post-usage experiences of women. By utilizing the procedures of grounded theory, six categories as design strategies emerged: BSE: Strategies, BSE: Limitations, BSE: Emotions, Mobile BSE Apps: Needs, Mobile BSE Apps: Benefits, and Mobile BSE Apps: Limitations. Consequently, feeding on the result of the study and positive technology literature, design dimensions were identified, and design recommendations were made to enhance the positive mobile BSE apps experience.

Alternatif gıda ağları için sürdürülebilir tasarım önerileri: güneşköy'ün topluluk destekli tarım (tdt) modeli üzerine bir vaka çalışması

The global food system consists of complex processes (i.e., food production, distribution, consumption, and disposal) and contains several environmental, economic, and social sustainability challenges. As a result of the food system's problems, some producers and consumers have taken actions that have resulted in the emergence of alternative food networks. These are primarily bottom-up initiatives led by creative and innovative groups of people collaborating to develop alternative food-system solutions. Different areas of design for sustainability, such as social innovations, creative communities, and product-service-system design, can improve and empower alternative food initiatives through diverse strategies and methods. Also, these communities carry the characteristics of creative communities and involve valuable sources of knowledge and insights for designers. In this regard, this thesis focuses on the Güneşköy initiative that is selected as a case study in the context of the Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) model. This study aims to examine the significant aspects of the CSA model within the context of the Güneşköy initiative through adopting participatory design and action research approaches to present design for sustainability implications that empower the community to maintain its activities and structure.

Endüstriyel tasarımcıların gözünden platforma dayalı tasarım iş pratiğinde işin anlamlılığının incelenmesi

Over the past decade the world of work has been experiencing digital transformation. Integrating the digital processes and tools into business models, digital transformation has led to the shift in the traditional business structures, hierarchies, relations, and the workplace. Thanks to this shift in the traditional way of work, today, it is possible to outsource the work through an open call to a geographically dispersed mass of people. This means that, companies or individuals now have access to an indefinitely large group of people, and are able to solve their specific problems with them in exchange for payment by using online platforms on the web. This new model of work is referred to as crowdwork. This research focuses on a professional group, industrial designers, who have increasingly preferred to work on online crowdwork platforms as a digital work form in recent years. Despite the increased importance of crowdwork and online platforms and the rapid incorporation of industrial designers into this work model, little is known about the topic. This thesis examines this gap by exploring where and how designers find meaning in crowdwork. The fieldwork of the thesis conducted in the context of Turkey consists of interviews with 22 Turkish industrial designers. The analysis of the interviews discusses meaningful work for designers on online crowdwork platforms with respect to the three needs suggested by self-determination theory, which are (1) autonomy, (2) competence, and (3) relatedness. The thesis offers two main conclusions based on the findings obtained from the interviews. First, doing design projects on crowdwork platforms meets the needs of autonomy, competence, and relatedness at different levels. While platforms fulfill designers' needs for autonomy and competence and provide designers with positive experiences, the situation changes and gets complicated when relationships are involved. Second, from the perspective of industrial designers, designing on crowdwork platforms imitates working as an in-house designer in an organization. The experiences of designers regarding their relationships with other actors in in-house work are reproduced here, in design crowdwork.

İkiliklerle oynamak: Oyuncak tasarımında toplumsal cinsiyet ilişkileri

In this study, I explore the ways in which gender binaries are materialized through design processes in different toy design practices. I frame it with a body of literature that considers gender as a socially constructed phenomenon that is naturalized through material and discursive repetitions. Design as a material practice consists of multi-layered entanglements in which intersected oppressions and inequalities based on gender, sexual identity, class, ethnicity are both constructed and reproduced. Toy design specifically has been in the limelight within design areas because of its entrenched traditional binary gender segregation practices from design brief to toys' placement on shelves and its possibility to shape its user group, which is characterized by their vulnerability. Even if the toy design itself is emblematic for reproducing the 'pinks and blues' polarization, it actually harbors a variety of material practices and complex relations in which all actors temporarily co-construct gender with momentary interactions. To provide a perspective into the multifaceted social and technical relationships, I identified three designers who are situated in different relationships and conducted interviews with these designers and members from communities that these designers were in close contact with. I draw three main conclusions on reproduction and deconstruction mechanisms of gendered materialities in design: The temporary fixations of designers and products in the binarized system reproduces gendered materialities, mobility of designers and products in this system engender different socio-material and socio-technical encounters that lead to both reproduction and deconstruction of gendered materialities, material participation that based on transformative and holistic gender-deconstructive approach not just unhinges but reconstructs gender norms through communities.

Kültürel sonda aracı olarak jugaad'ı kullanarakaçık tasarımın araştırılması

Design democratization has been a growing movement around the world, blurring the boundary between the roles of users and designers and encouraging design after design that makes the process of designing mo re inclusive. Open Design is one such approach that encourages no limits in terms of the kind, time, or space of the contribution. While a very primary attribute of this approach is inclusivity, there is a lack of exploration in terms of actual application of the process in a tangible product design process and in particular contexts. This thesis intends to explore the implications of an Open Design process in the context of a developing country where a lack of in_house production and resources empower users to be involved in their own making processes and practices. Jugaad is one such cultural practice where people innovate in the name of necessity: they per sonalize, adapt, re use or upgrade whatever is available to find make shift solutions for their very contextual problems. This thesis investigates Open Design practices where Jugaad is used as a cultural probe, putting participant designers at the center o f a research through design process. Two workshops were conducted that asked participants to design alternative solutions for a home appliance (upright cleaner). The workshops required participants to take an Open Design approach, using Jugaad as a cultura l probe. The insights are presented at the end where the adaptation of this unconventional method of designing positively influenced the experience of designers, inspired them to empathize with the user group more and made them view products from a totally different perspective.

Medical device development and design (MDDD) is one of the sectors with the highest level of safety regulations offering almost risk free products. Actors participating in the development process of these devices (governments, investors, non-governmental organizations, patients, etc.) not only create these highly strict regulations but also define boundaries for the design space in which design strategies are structured. These requirements eliminate suspicions over safety issues and also create a hard shell for product designers disabling the use of possible design strategies regarding user experience. While technological developments create opportunity of moving personal medical devices into daily life, relationship between these medical products and other domestic ones should be constructed skilfully in order to avoid contradictions which can even result with stopping the use of these technologies. Although healthcare mobile apps have become popular and widely used in the last decade, medical devices which are expected to be used by non-professionals have not fully adapted to the daily life yet. The goal of this dissertation is proposing a guidance for design professionals with a set of design strategies that can be employed in the MDDD process. In order to achieve this goal, a field study with 30 participants has been carried out. CPAP device users are selected for the field study because CPAP is one of the widely used home use medical devices manufactured in the Ankara region. The field study is composed of semi-structured interview questions and scales about their experiences referring to their devices and Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) . The thesis concludes with a checklist structured on the findings of the field study which includes suggestions as strategies for designers in design and development of home use medical devices.

Katılımcı bağlılığı sayesinde gevşek toplulukların varlığını sürdürmesi: Innocampus hızlandırıcı programı örneği

Alongside the growing interest in entrepreneurship, accelerators and their role in entrepreneurship ecosystems and the success of entrepreneurs is increasingly being explored and studied. However, the social dynamics present in these programs and their role on the sustainability of the impact they have on the continued development of alumni have been relatively overlooked in the literature. The aim of the study is to explore and understand factors influencing continued alumni engagement with accelerator programs in the case of the Innocampus accelerator program. This study explores participant engagement in the Innocampus accelerator program before, during, and after their graduation from the participants' perspective. This thesis also examines whether or not these engagements lead to the development of communities of practice that influence alumni development. In order to understand these, semi-structured interviews have been conducted with the alumni of the Innocampus accelerator program, and they have been asked about their experiences and reflections on the subject of study. Three major conclusions have been derived from the study. First, post-program engagement of the Innocampus alumni with the organization is influenced by the dynamics developed through their experiences in joining Innocampus and during their participation in the program, combined with experiences and interactions after the program with Innocampus and its network. Second, the expectations and motivations of alumni continue to change in different stages towards the organization and the network. Third, as a result of the existing network structure, alumni engagement continues inside the network in the form of a loose community.

Sosyal medya fenomenlerı aracılığıyla marka ve geçici mağaza tasarımı deneyimi

The changes and developments that our world is going through do not only affect every individual in different ways but brands as well. The increasing number of research studies on marketing techniques and consumer behaviour helps brands to adapt themselves into this changing world. Ephemeral retailing can be seen as the result of these current requirements and consumer needs, and it has become a significant concept for brands and consumers. Examination of the literature on ephemeral retailing shows us that ephemeral spaces such as pop-stores and event stores have become more than a door used only for profit and that these are spaces where design plays an important role, traditional marketing strategies are surpassed, and multidisciplinary work is practiced. These spaces which do not solely serve brands but also concentrate on the consumer, bring experience to the focus and are full of surprises, play an active role in twenty-first century retailing. The aim of this thesis is to study the ways in which interior design affects and contributes to brand experience in the case of influencers conveying their ephemeral store experiences via social media. In line with this aim, a two-stage field study was conducted. Observation constitutes the first stage of this study, while in the second stage ten semi-structured interviews are conducted. Both the positive and negative effects of vi interior design and of the ways in which these spaces are conveyed to consumers via social media bring about for brands themselves are examined. As a conclusion, this thesis presents suggestions about the use of interior design elements in ephemeral retails and social media strategies that brands utilize. Attention was paid to interior design, the ways in which it is conveyed, and the relationship brands have with these concepts. Keywords: Ephemeral Retailing, Pop-Up Retailing, Interior Design, Brand Experience, Social Media Marketing

Tekrar oynat! önceden kaydedilmiş müzik çalma deneyimlerindeki değişikliklere yönelik bir tasarım çalışması

Music has always been a key element for people to connect with themselves and others. For this study, the main focus is to investigate pre-recorded music playing experiences through time with changing technology and design. As technology develops, many habits and behaviours of people change. Listening to music is an experience that has changed throughout the decades, with regards to technological developments and social contexts. From radio and gramophones to mobile phones and online streaming, the means of listening to music has been through many great changes. Various products and interfaces have been used to organize and deliver recorded music, such as Walkman's, CD players, and iPods. In this sense, designers have always been involved in presenting the pre-recorded music playing experience to people. As the needs and expectations of users have evolved, so designers' contributions have also developed, especially in the transition from physical to digital music players. The history of this evolution will be explored in this study, plotting how pre-recorded music playing experiences have changed or remained the same alongside the changes in product design and means of delivering music. A proposal of design and future music playing experiences will be presented at the end of the thesis. Keywords: User Experience, User-Product Interaction, Pre-recorded Music Playing

Kullanıcı eğilimlerine yönelik tasarım: banyoortamında su etkinliği için kişisel bakım ve hijyenpratiklerinde davranış değişikliğini teşvik etmekamacıyla erken tasarım aşamalarının desteklenmesi

Across many regions of the world, the ever-increasing households water demand, mainly shaped through individuals' unsustainable behaviors, is threatening the water supplies. It is widely acknowledged that design offers possibilities to mitigate the environmental impacts of use behaviors through structuring the ways individuals engage with their surroundings. Though, since behaviors are determined through a range of factors that are difficult to influence, design interventions aimed at reducing the harmful effects of use may not ensure behavior change. Advancing on this problem, this doctoral study aims to understand the behavioral reasons for intensive use of water, reveal the users' diverse intentions to adopt sustainable behaviors, and identify design strategies for behavior change to support the development of ideas for influencing behaviors for the effective use of water through a study focusing on personal care and hygiene practices in the bathroom environment. To achieve this, it adopts a generative research approach to reveal the individuals' existing behaviors, attitudes, and intentions concerning water consumption and a research through design approach to effectively communicate the acquired knowledge to inspire the development of diverse ideas for behavior change. Through cycles of designing, implementing, evaluating, and revising, this thesis offers a generative tool (inspiration cards) and a generative method (DUI workshops) and evaluates their implications on the ideation process through a series of design workshops. The proposed inspirations cards and the DUI workshop provide a valuable knowledge source and guidance for the design researchers and practitioners to influence behaviors towards sustainable directions through enabling them to explore the problem area and the user, generate diverse ideas, refine the developed ideas, reconsider the ideas for different user intentions and support their design decisions.

Gelişen yeni çalışma ekosistemlerinde iş birliğinin anlaşılması: Yaratım atölyeleri

As the design problems confronted are getting more complex, the necessity of different expertise becomes inevitable for comprehensive design solutions which indicate the importance of forming teams with professionals from diverse disciplines. With the emergence of collaborative teams, the importance of working frames has become prominent, and collaborative working frames have been introduced, namely interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary, and transdisciplinary. These working frames determine the type and level of interaction between professionals, espousing various opportunities and challenges. Apart from traditional working environments, there are emergent work ecosystems – such as makerspaces – that involve varying collaborative structures in terms of organizational, spatial, and social dimensions. This study investigates the collaboration dynamics in makerspaces through these dimensions and aims to analyze the new collaboration mindset, methods, and toolkits provided by makerspaces. Understanding the makerspace elements and their effects on the collaborative activity will contribute to setting up novel collaboration models. In the scope of the research, in-depth interviews with both makers and makerspace facilitators were conducted and collaborative action in makerspaces was analyzed considering organizational, spatial, and social elements through the experiences and insights of the participants. Based on the analysis of the gathered data, three main conclusions were drawn. Firstly, makerspaces introduce a non-disciplinary collaboration environment where interest-driven knowledge blurs the disciplinary fields. Secondly, tangible means produced in these making-oriented spaces become tools that enhance learning collaboratively. Lastly, drivers of the collaboration vary among makerspaces as goal-driven or place-driven collaborative making.

Computer aided design program 'Çizen' and designers interaction and efficiency analysis; Development of intelligent interface suggestions

Software is not only a rapidly developing and indispensable tool today but also the most prominent driving force of digital transformation. Thanks to the innovation studies carried out in the software of these programs, the productivity growth is achieved in the design processes, and the errors arising from the design could be reduced to a minimum. In Turkey, since 2010, working on CAD development have been initiated; the domestic and national program called "ÇİZEN," has been developed for sheet metal forming design. In this study, new techniques and innovative methods were performed in the ÇİZEN program, which was developed and personalized specifically to a particular sector and then, User Experience Survey was conducted. The study aimed to design a simple and intelligent interface by clearly determining the needs and expectations of sheet metal designers and the user's program experience. Within the scope of this objective, user experience surveys were conducted with the participation of 14 users. In this context, the users were asked pre-configured and open-ended questions, and by giving the users specific tasks, the focus points in the program were revealed with heat maps through the Eye Tracker device. As a result of the finalization of pre-test studies and obtaining eye-tracking data, the final-test phase was initiated; and after the general opinions about the program were received, System Usability and Nonverbal Pictorial Scale research was conducted. The data obtained from the research results were interpreted, evaluated, and suggestions were developed under three main headings: productivity, simplicity/functionality, and interface.
