The socia-economic and demographic structure of Alaşehir district according to the temetuat books in 1844 and 1845

The title of our study is ''The Socia-Economic and Demographic structure of Alaşehir in the Temettuat Books of 1844 and 1845. Our study is based on Alaşehir's temettuat books which are numbered with 1403,1409,1412,1414,1418,1423,1425, 1427,1430,1431,1432,1434,1435,1438,1441,1446, 1455, 1459, 1460, 1462 and 1465. These books which were prepared during temettuat enumerations between 1844 and 1845 years take place in Prime Minister? s Ottoman Archives of Finance to the Revenue Accountant Department.These temettuat enumerations have great importance in the arrangements of Financial field that are arranged in Tanzimat period.The purpose of these enumerations are to gather taxes regularly and equitably. By this way, it was decided to ask taxes according to people? s wealth and income.The enumerations of people? s real estate, land , animals and their income were determined in order to designate the amount of tax according to people ` s strength.These people were living in cities, towns and villages of Anatolia and the Balkans. The enumerations done in general districts of Ottoman Empire give information about the Socio-Economic and Demographic structure of Ottoman society.We have tried to do evaluations of the Socio-Economic and Demographic structure of Alaşehir District in 1844 by researching temettuat books. So that the population of Alaşehir in 1844 and 1845, lands, buildings,animals, the names and nicknames of family used in district, people?s professions and yearly incomes of these professions, products grown in the district, taxes paid to the state and obtained numerical data are shown in tables mathematically.The neighbourhoods in the center of Alaşehir are examined in our study.By the way of these researches we have tried to define the features of Philadelphia? s socio- economic,cultural,demographic structure.We have tried to observe the arrangements in the financial and economic field started with Tanzimat declaration in the criterion of Alaşehir.Keywords: Alaşehir, Temettûat, Agriculture, Livestock, Tax, Crafts, Professions, Neighborhood, Household, Populaiton.
