The consideration of loneliness and sadness as a form of expression in contemporary painting

The concepts of loneliness and sadness have always found a place within art. Artists have occasionally interpreted these two concepts based on their era or they have associated them with their own understanding outside their period and displayed them in their works. When these pieces were exhibited, various emotions, meanings, thoughts, and concepts were interpreted by the audience. Loneliness and sadness, which we consider to be two of the most important aspects of art, have manifested themselves in artistic works from the past to the present in every era. As a form of expression, painting has been one of the most significant and unique ways to convey these two concepts. Throughout life, human beings have sometimes felt lonely and sad for a certain period or even continuously, and they have been able to express themselves through the art of painting. Therefore, it can be said that loneliness and sadness have always shown themselves as a form of expression in every era of painting. These two phenomena that have been expressed from the past to the present have formed a common culture, understanding, emotional state, and thought process over time. Artists from different parts of the world have expressed themselves through these phenomena using similar or common language. These phenomena, which form a common identity, have not only influenced the artists but have also formed a form of understanding in the audience. With the changing world conditions and standards, this mode of understanding has spread to broader audiences. This form, reaching the masses, has interacted with the individuals from different religions, languages, sects, genders, nations, and communities, bringing together different perspectives and uniting them in a common language on the concepts of loneliness and sadness. The global narrative and understanding of contemporary painting have played an important role in observing the state of loneliness and sadness in both an artist and an audience. This study titled focuses on how loneliness and sadness are addressed in contemporary painting. The examination of these phenomena has allowed us to understand how artists creatively express themselves using different plastic objects, materials, techniques, understandings, and styles. The study explores how loneliness and sadness in contemporary painting affect people's lives and how art serves as a means to express these emotions. The introduction section of this study explains the subject and problem of the research, its purpose, significance, limitations, scope, population, sample, and methodology. The conceptual framework section discusses the definition and explanation of the phenomenon of loneliness and sadness as well as their connections with the art of painting. Furthermore, the section also evaluates the concept of loneliness and sadness in contemporary art from the 20th century to the present. The Findings and Interpretations section examines the works of Adam Riches, Anne Magill, Jörn Peter Budesheim, Katja Lang, Lesley Oldaker, Schalk van der Merwe, Seiichi Terazono, Simona Cheli, Stefan Zsaitsits, and William Stoehr, and evaluates the concepts of loneliness and sadness in their works. These artists have contributed to contemporary art by incorporating the concepts of loneliness and sadness into their works. In the section on practical applications, seven works, which created within the scope of this thesis, are evaluated in the context of loneliness and sadness.
