Westernization in Turkish novel in republic period (1923/1940)

The drift of Ottoman Empire to a new civilization initiated the westernization period. Westernization had an actual breaking point with rescript of Gülhane declared in 1839. The desire of knowing the west and having western elements in their life brought a systematic change period. This change period occurring in social terms took effect in all areas to form the society. Our work intends to detect the elements of this change seen in westernization period which reflected to novels of National Literature period.Our work is composed of two parts. In the first part which is the main part of the work, in Turkish Novels of Republic Period we examine fifty novels printed between the years of 1923?1940 in the ?Transitional stage of fiction to real life? in terms of westernization. We try to concretize the change process in the behavioral and ideational dimension of individual which forms the basis of society according to science disciplines sociology, psychology and philosophy. We try to reveal the change caused by westernization in cultural structure in accordance with novels published in that period. We take the way of detecting the wrong westernization change and the reflection of the social breakup on novels caused by this change process.In the second part of our work under the title of `?Inclining from fiction to entertainment life?? we determine the functions of these changes in faulty westernization period by examining changes in entertainment life in novels and reflections of these changes in cultural life.After the conclusion part which tells what kind of a process that westernization had in Turkish Novels of Republic Period, a broad bibliography which contributes to our work takes place.Key Words: Republic Period, Novel, Westernization, cultural change, alienation
