Abstract (EN)

The main purpose of this thesis is to understand and interpret the processes that lead to urban regeneration in 16 cities in various countries of the world. For each case, the processes that carried the cities in the sample to urban regeneration were examined by looking backwards (to their past) from the point where the urban regeneration was completed. Comparative case analysis method was used to achieve this aim. In the analysis process, the fuzzy set ideal type analysis technique was used. In the study, it was aimed to understand to what extent the various ideal types, which emerged by the combination of 12 factors thought to activate urban regeneration, represent the experiences of urban regeneration. Urban regeneration is a social phenomenon that has been experienced many times in many countries. Although there are many studies that examine urban regeneration cases on the basis of individual examples in the literature, bringing together urban regeneration examples from around the world and applying the comparative case analysis method is an uncommon attempt. In the study, the urban regeneration processes of 16 cities were examined in the context of a total of 12 factors under the demographic, economic, administrative and environmental factors. The comparative case analysis method was carried out through the fuzzy set technique and ideal types. Relationships between factors calibrated (valued) by fuzzy set technique were analysed using the "Ideal Type Analysis" (ITA) program developed in the "R" statistical programming language. As a result of the analysis, the characteristics, similarities and distinctions of the cases were revealed by comparing the factors of urban regeneration cases in the sample simultaneously. When comparing the cases in the sample, it should be noted that the study is a first in the Turkish social science literature in the context of the concrete implementation of the fuzzy set technique. In this regard, it is stated that besides contributing to urban theories through the types of urban regeneration revealed by the research, its contribution in the methodological context is also important through the fuzzy set technique applied.
