Effect of three different solutions used in patients with hematological malignity on oral mucositis

The purpose of study was to evaluate effect of different solutions administered on patients with hematological malignity on oral mucositis and was conducted as randomized, controlled, experimental. Before study, permission was received. Power analysis was made in order to determine the number of patients. Chlorhexidine gluconate and benzydamine chloride were administered (29 patients) to the first group; calcium and phosphate were administered (28 patients) to the second group, and a solution containing black mulberry syrup was administered (24 patients) to the third group. The administration was initiated before the treatments started and it continued until the patients recovered from neutropenia. The data of the study were collected by using a questionnaire and "Mucositis Grading Scale" of the WHO. The mucositis levels of the patients were evaluated and recorded every day, date were analyzed by using chi-square test. It was found that in all groups on the 7th day, no grade 3 or 4 mucositis was observed. There was no difference in terms of grades 0, 1 and 2. On the 14th day; grade 2 mucositis was observed at the rate of 8.0% in the third group; whereas, this rate was 17.9% in the second group, and 16.7% in the first group; Grade 3 mucositis was observed at the rate of 6.7% in the first group; whereas, this was not observed in the second and third groups. On the 21st day; Grade 3 mucositis was at the rate of 8.0% in the third group, and this rate was 7.1% in the second group and 13.3% in the first group (p>0.05). It was found that frequency of mucositis was low in patients in the second and third groups compared to the first group. Therefore, it could be recommended to use solutions containing especially black mulberry and calcium phosphate.
