Investigation of the relationships between marital adjustment, coping with stress, psychological symptoms and hopelessness in infertile women

In this study, it was aimed to comprehensively determine the relationships between marital adjustment in infertile women and women's infertility-related stress levels, psychological symptoms, and hopelessness. This research was carried out in Dicle University, Faculty of Medicine, Obstetrics Unit, and the data of the study were collected within the 2019-2020 academic year after the necessary permissions were obtained. The universe of the research consists of infertile women who receive treatment in the specified centers. The sample of the study consisted of 194 infertile women over the age of 18, who did not receive a psychiatric diagnosis, who met the inclusion criteria. "Demographic Information Form", "Dyadic Adjustment Scale (DAS)", "Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS)", "Stress Coping Styles" and "Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI)" were used to collect data. As a result of the answers given by the infertile women participating in the research; When the difference between the demographic characteristics of infertile women and marital adjustment, coping with stress, psychological symptoms, and hopelessness levels was examined, it was found that there was a significant difference in general, according to the variables of women's education level and the monthly total income level of the family. On the other hand, women who smoke / alcohol have higher perceptions of coping with stress and psychological symptoms than women who do not use any substance. Relationship between marital adjustment, coping with stress, psychological symptoms, and levels of hopelessness in infertile women was examined, an inverse and low relationship was found between hopelessness levels and stress coping, while an inverse and moderate relationship was found between hopelessness levels and psychological symptoms and marital adjustment. While a correct and moderate relationship was found between coping with stress and psychological symptoms, no significant relationship was found between coping with stress and marital adjustment. Therefore, it can be said that they are not affected by each other. An accurate and moderate effect was found between the psychological symptoms and couple adaptations of infertile women. Finally, in infertile women, the effect of dyadic adjustment on hopelessness levels, stress coping and psychological symptoms due to infertility was found to be statistically significant, and it was found that as the relationship between hopelessness, stress coping and psychological symptoms gets stronger, dyadic adjustment will increase.
