İsmāil al-Qūnawī's Hāshiya on Anwār al-Tanzīl and the originality value of the hāshiya: A study with the example of word "Allah" in the basmala

Baydāwi's (d. 691/1291) Qur'an commentary Anwār al-tanzīl is one of the essential works followed in the Ottoman madrasah curriculum for centuries. The massive literature of glosses (hāshiyas) based on Anwār have constituted a tradition of interpretation. This dissertation aims to focus on the hāshiya written by İsmāil al-Qūnawī (d. 1194/1781) on Anwār which is one of the important rings of the Anwâr interpretation tradition. The main purpose of the study is to reveal the content and features of al-Qūnawī's work in a way that reveals its relationship with its sources and to determine the originality value of the work. For this purpose, the word "Allah" in the basmala was chosen as a sample and the interpretation of this word was examined chronologically and comparatively in the commentary literature. The sources and contributions of the work were determined by comparing the explanations of al-Qūnawī on the interpretation of the word with the hashiyas literature.
