The comparinson of individuals' level of internalized stigmatization having substance use disorder and schizophrenic disorder and their parents' perception of the illness

The Comparinson Of İndividuals' Level Of İnternalized Stigmatization Having Substance Use Disorder And Schizophrenic Disorder And Their Parents' Perception Of the İllness. The aim of this study is to compare the level of internalized stigmatization of the patients who have substance use disorders, schizophrenic disorder and healty individuals and their parents' beliefs about addiction and mental illness, and the levels of hopelessness, depression and burnout; this is also a study to investigate the relationship between the internalized stigmatization of the patients who have substance use disorder and schizophrenic disorder and their parents' perception of the disease. In this direction, this study included 30 individuals who has substance use disorder and admitted to AMATEM (Alchol And Drug Addiction Treatment And Education Centre) in the provience in BURSA for treatment and their mothers; 30 individuals who have schizophrenic disorder and admitted to Community Mental Health Centers (TRSM) for treatment and their mothers; 30 healthy individuals and their mothers. In total 180 people participated. All participants are over 18 and they live with their mothers. Beliefs Related Addiction Scale, Beliefs Toward to Mental Illness Scale, Beck Depression Scale, Maslach Burnout Scale and Beck Hopelessness Scale were applied to all the mothers who participated in the study. Internalized Stigmation in Mental Disorders Scale was applied to individuals who have substance use disorder, schizophrenic disorder and to the control group. One-Way ANOVA and Pearson Product Moment Correlation were used for statistical analysis. In this research, in terms of Beliefs Related Addiction Scale's behavioral responsibility and healing responsibility subscales, Beck Depression Scale and Maslach Burnout Scale's emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and personal achievement subscales; there was a significant difference between the mothers who have sons with substance use disorders, schizophrenic disorder and the mothers in the control group. There were significant differences between the mothers who have sons with substance use disorders Beck Hopelessness Scale and the mothers in the control group; mothers who have sons with schizophrenic disorder and the mothers in the control group in terms of Beck Hopelessness Scale and future emotions, expectations and loss of motivation subscales. In addition, Internalized Stigmatization Scale were applied to the individuals with substance use disorder, schizophrenic disorder and healthy ones; according to total score, validation of stereotypes, alienation, perceived discrimination and social withdrawal findings, there was a difference between the individuals with substance use disorder and the control group and between schizophrenia and the control group. A significant relationship was found between the internalized stigmatization subscales of the patients with substance use disorder and schizophrenic disorder and their mothers' beliefs related addiction and beliefs towards the mental illness subscales. As a result of this research; the levels of depression, burnout and hopelessness of mothers who have sons with substance use disorder were higher than the mothers who have sons with schizophrenic disorders and mothers in the control group.
