The studies of the Holy Qur'an in mali

North and West Africa are among the first places where Islam spread. The Ghana Empire was located in what is now the Republic of Mali in West Africa. Ghana was introduced to Islam in the 7th century AD through traders. After the fall of the Ghana Empire, Islam became more widespread and dominant in the Mali Empire that replaced it. In the 13th century, Mali Emperor Mansa Musa (1312-1337) made a pilgrimage and returned with scholars and scientists. Thanks to these scholars, education, art, architecture, and other activities gained momentum in Mali. The Songhai State continued these developments. On the other hand, Mali lost its resistance to colonialism in the late 19th century and remained under French colonial rule for about 70 years until it regained its independence as a republic in 1960 and subsequently changed its form of government three times. The aim of this study is to shed light on Quranic education, interpretation, and understanding in Mali, how it is reflected in society, and translations written in local languages, taking into account these historical developments. In the study, an academic description was made within the framework of information obtained from sources written about the historical development of Quranic studies, institutions, and scholars in Mali. While changes throughout history (empires, short-lived and small states, colonial movements, regime changes, etc.) have not made much difference in terms of Quranic education in Mali, they have made a difference in terms of practice and understanding. In the past,while the Qur'an played an active role in political and legal fields in former Mali and Songhai Empires and states such as Masina, it is now passive in such matters but still maintains its sanctity and respectability in society.
