Student opinions concerning teachers' classroom management competences

It is crucial that in order to make the teaching activities efficient, teacher should have the necessary information about the classroom management and apply them in class. The aim of this research is to determine the classroom management competence of teachers according to the students opinions. In the research qualitative and qualitative research techniques have been used as the mixed method. The qualitative research have been carried out with 1016 students studied in the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grades at secondary school Kadıköy district of İstanbul city, in 2014-2015 academic year between November 2014 and February 2015. The data of qualitative research is collected through "The Scale of Determination of Teachers' Obeying the Classroom Management Principles". Frequency, percentage, average, standard deviation are used as descriptive statistical techniques in the evaluation of data. The qualitative data of the research is carried out with 50 students of the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grades who studied secondary school at İstanbul, Kadıköy between March 2015 and April 2015. Interviews have been made in qualitative part of the research. The data of qualitative research has been evaluated by the help of content analysis. According to the qualitative data of the research, it is seen that teachers apply the items of "Obeying teacher student relations" and "Principles of education and teaching" at intermediate level. Students generally state that teachers obey the classroom management principles at intermediate level. Significant differences have been observed in students' opinions about the application of classroom management principles of secondary school teachers in terms of sex parameter. It is also seen that there are significant differences between students' opinions in terms of grade parameter. According to the qualitative research results, students require teachers to be humorous and enjoyable in class. Students want to be awarded by marks, warned as a punishment and forgiven. Students desire teachers to teach the lesson using enjoyable activities and games. According to the findings of the research, giving weight to the educations about "classroom management" before and during the service, can make a contribution to preventing undesired behaviors and achieving more effective education and teaching activities. It is expected that findings of the research will be useful for improving teachers' classroom management competences and providing efficient classroom management.
