The stringed plectrum instruments used in the Turkish music during the Ottoman period and their reflection to the present

The music genre that is called Turkish music which is a part of our musical identity today dates back to pre Ottoman Empire. The works on music theory of scientists that lived before Ottoman Empire like İbn-i Sina, Farabi, Safiyüddin Abdülmümin Urmevi is a proof for that. Ottoman Empire has used Turkish music as long as it exists and gave it an identity of its own. During the period of Ottoman Empire which lasted centuries, Turkish music went through various changes by the necessities and the needs at that point in time. Considering that one of the most important of these changes is the changes in Turkish music instruments, this study has been prepared. The aim of the study is to determine the change experienced by Turkish music instruments from the Ottoman period to the present. However, in order to keep the scope of the study within the master thesis, the study was limited to the investigation of stringed plectrum instruments used in the Ottoman period instead of all Turkish music instruments. The study consists of four parts. In the introduction, the aim and methods of the research are explained. The second part is the determination of the plectrum string instruments used in Turkish music in the Ottoman Period and their physical characteristics from the sources. The third section is the section in which the characteristics of the stringed plectrum instruments used in today's Turkish music performance and the changes of the same instruments used in the Ottoman period are determined. In the conclusion part, all the findings obtained in the study are given as items. Key words: Turkish music, Stringed Plectrum Instruments, Ottoman Period.
