Evaluation of the effects of diode lasers addition to inital periodontal theraphy in the treatment of periodontitis

The aim of this study was to evaluate effectiveness of diode lasers addition to inital periodontal theraphy by assessment of periodontal clinical indexes (GI,PI, PPD, CAL, GI) and biochemical markers (TNF-α, IL-1β, CTXI). 22 systemically healthy, periodontitis patients were included in this study. Clinical periodontal parametres were recorded and GCF samples were collected in baseline, 1st, 3rd and 6th months. Test and control sites were chosen by randomization. At the control site, patients received SRP treatment alone; at the contralateral test site, they received SRP and laser treatment. Both groups showed significantly decrease in clinical parametres but there was no difference between groups. A significant decrease was shown in TNF-⍺ and IL-1ß levels in both groups. In control and test groups, no statistically significant differences were observed in CTXI levels. There was no significant difference between groups, in terms of biochemical parametres. It was concluded that, diode lasers did not provide significant improvements to periodontal treatment of periodontitis in terms of clinical and biochemical parameters. Further studies are needed on the use of laser for the treatment of periodontitis. Key Words: Periodontitis, Diode Laser, TNF-⍺, IL-1ß, CTXI
