The signification of Safiye Erol's narratives through the approach of model reader

This study includes a signification effort of the fictional works of Safiye Erol (1902-1964), who was a qualified artist, a versatile thinker, a literary journalist, a great philology doctor and translator. She was an author writing novels and stories which have been symbolically deep. Also, she was a "model author" whose works can be read over and over again. For this reason, a literary method called "model reader" by Umberto Eco was used to examine her narratives. The aim of this study was to penetrate into the deep and interminable semantic fields of Erol's by using multiple reading models from the model reader's viewpoint. This study purposed to evaluate the place of Erol in the Turkish novel history with reference to literary and aesthetics criteria. For this purpose, the qualities of the model reader and open work was addressed in the introduction part of the study. After Erol's life and artistic viewpoint was presented in this part her narratives were investigated. Thematic categorizations, fictional and linguistic ways of her works were presented. In the "love" part of this study, the table of dramatic action of Erol's works was put forward with reference to the colors of love theory. Based on this framework, emerging characters, concepts, symbols were examined in the states of love and disappointment stages. This analysis was one of the original ways of this study. Then, the processes of breaking up and rebirth were investigated in detail and focused on sociological background of Erol's narratives. Through time and memory theories of Henri Bergson and national identity theory of Anthony Smith, the historical framework of Erol's works was addressed. These analyses revealed that Erol had a unique civilization thought. In the last part of this study, it was focused on the results of the semantic and fiction world of her narratives. Also, it was touched on the ways that make Erol's works "open works" and what the place of Erol should be in the literature history. Then, it was presented a few interviews conducting with people who know Erol, Erol's photos, a story not published in her books, her letters to Sâmiha Ayverdi, a sample page from her notebook and half-finished novel.
