Abstract (EN)

The research is a quasi-experimental randomized control study conducted to determine the effect of infant care education given to primiparous women who have just given birth, on their infant care self-confidence and sleep quality. The sample of the study included 183 primiparous women, 92 of whom were in the intervention group and 91 were in the control group. The study was conducted with primiparous women who voluntarily accepted to participate in the study, who met the selection criteria of the study, between 01 May and 31 December 2021. Data were collected using the Personal Information Form, Pharis SelfConfidence Scale (PSS) and Postpartum Sleep Quality Scale for both groups. Postpartum infant care for primiparous women in the intervention group on days 1-7 and 7-14. Trainings were given for 2 hours a week between days and days, and in the next stage, training on baby care was provided by connecting with the women in the experimental group via Zoom. In addition, the training content was sent to the women in the intervention group as a booklet before the training. The women in the control group were contacted via social media (Instagram), and no training or consultancy services were provided to this group afterwards. In the analysis of data; Chi-square test, Independent Sample t Test, single and two factor analysis of variance (ANOVA) and post hoc test Least Significant Difference (LSD) test were used to determine the differences between groups. In the study, the mean PSS score of the women in the experimental group was 57.41±5.65, while it was 51.48±10.66 in the women in the control group. While there was a significant difference between the baby care self-confidence levels of the primiparous women in the experimental group according to the variables of occupation, family income, family structure, the sex of the baby and the mode of delivery (p<0.05), the age, mode of delivery, and previous baby care status of the women in the control group were not related to the variables. A significant difference was found between infant care self-confidence levels (p<0.05). In the study, the total Postpartum Sleep Quality Scale mean score of the women in the experimental group was 26.50±7.87, while it was 28.93±7.63 for the women in the control group. While there was no significant difference between the postpartum sleep quality levels of the primiparous women in the experimental group according to all variables (p>0.05), there was a significant difference between the postpartum sleep quality levels of the women in the control group according to the variable of their previous baby care status (p<0.05). As a result, baby care self-confidence and postpartum sleep quality levels of the women in the experimental group were higher than those in the control group. Accordingly, it was found that the education on baby care given to women who gave birth in the early postpartum period was effective on their baby care self-confidence and sleep quality. It is thought that the dissemination of studies on baby care training for primiparous women in the postpartum period will contribute to increasing women's lack of knowledge about baby care, self-confidence and sleep quality. Key Words: Baby Care Education, Postpartum, Primiparous Woman, SelfConfidence, Sleep Quality.
