Abstract (EN)
Midwives/nurses are in direct contact with the newborn in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Therefore They are well placed to provide Trauma-Informed Care (TIC) in the unit, which is a traumatic experience for the newborn. However, it is stated that midwives/nurses do not have enough knowledge on this subject and therefore they are not self-confident about the practice. This research was carried out as a quasi-experimental research by using pre-test, post-test and follow-up test to evaluate the knowledge, attitude and behavior change in order to establish the TIC education program in NICU and to evaluate its effectiveness. The data of the research were collected between 14-21 January 2023. The training program was structured by the researchers and It was carried out in three sessions and a total of 12 hours on the online platform. Introductory information form and pre-test, post-test and follow-up test to evaluate knowledge, skills and attitudes were used as data collection tools in the research. Data were collected using forms on the online platform. 270 midwives/nurses applied to the study, 177 people participated in the training by applying the pre-test, 146 people participated in the post-test after the training, and 137 people were involved in the whole process by performing the TIC applications and performing the follow-up test. Descriptive statistics were used in the analysis of quantitative data, ANOVA and Cochran Q tests were used in repeated measures with one factor, and content and thematic analysis were used in the analysis of qualitative data. It was determined that the participant's mean scores for knowledge and skills in the pre-test, post-test and follow-up test increased statistically significantly (p<.05) and their mean score for attitude decreased significantly after the instruction when compared with the post-training. When the participants' views on education were evaluated, it was determined that they needed TIC training and that they wanted newborn nurses/midwives to have this training. They stated that their TIC practice skills improved after the training and they were able to offer holistic care, including psychological care, to the newborn. It was determined that the awareness of the midwives/nurses about the importance of TIC presentation in the NICU increased and they were able to make an action plan to remove the obstacles in the implementation process. It is recommended that midwives/nurses working in NICU take an active role and responsibility in the diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation processes of their trauma for newborns, parents and themselves. In addition, it is recommended to determine the needs of training of the participants and to create a culture of TIC, to develop and disseminate new needs-based training programs.
