The effect of exercise dependence of swimmers on psychological toughness

Regular sports and training can contribute to sports culture and become an indispensable element of life over time. Swimming, which is among these sports branches, is also in the first place in terms of number of facilities and accessibility. In this study, it was aimed to examine the effect of exercise dependence of swimmers on psychological toughness. The population of the study consisted of athletes in Turkey, and the sample consisted of 305 athletes (171 men, 134 women) selected by random sampling method. As data collection tools, Psychological Toughness Scale (PBL) developed by Işık (2016) and Demir et al. (2018) Exercise Dependence scale was used. For the normality distribution of the data, the kurtosis skewness values were checked and it was determined that the data showed a normal distribution. In the analysis of the data, Independent Samples t-test and One-way Anova test and correlation analysis were used for the relationship between them. Post Hoc LSD test was performed for the difference between the groups. Findings: Statistically significant results were found for the variables of marital status, having a coaching certificate, weekly training frequency, educational status, age and swimming sport. A moderate and positive relationship was found between exercise dependence and psychological toughness. Results: It can be said that exercise dependence and psychological toughness are decisive factors for swimming. In order not to interrupt the normal life and not to affect the living habits negatively, it is recommended to do training with a specialist.
