Discussion of Conservation Approaches for the Selected Heritage Buildings in the Walled City of Famagusta

ABSTRACT: The Walled City of Famagusta is a multi-layered city of several socio-cultural and architectural heritages, from various stratus of time, each strata contributing to the richness of the historic city of Famagusta. The evidence of the several layers of architecture can be seen all within the city. To sustain this multi-layered architectural richness, the conservation of these layers of architecture for future generations is vital. To conserve these periods of architecture in the Walled City of Famagusta requires exploration of varying conservation approaches that are internationally valid to provide guidelines for adaptive reuse purpose. The focus of this thesis is to discuss conservation approaches through adaptive reuse for some selected buildings located within the Walled City of Famagusta. Adaptive reuse, as undertaken within this thesis, does not just change the program or function of the spatial environment, but may also prolong the authenticity of cultural and natural heritage of the place. Therefore, the main focus here is to shed some light on conservation of the authentic qualities of heritage buildings while at the same time assigning new uses considering contemporary needs of the users. The core aim of this thesis to provide a foundation for the documentation and appreciation of several architectural conservation approaches for selected periods of architecture in the Walled City of Famagusta and to provide guidelines for efficient conservation through adaptive reuse that is peculiar to selected buildings which are internationally sound. This was to answer the research question which is “what are the various internationally valid architectural conservation approaches that can be adopted for selected architectural products of different periods in the Walled City of Famagusta?” The bases of this thesis are adopted and evaluated through five case studies from the Walled City of Famagusta, which represents various periods of architecture; they are Chimney House, Cafer Pasha Hammam, Old Police Station, Gazi Elementary School and Efecan Building Complex. To achieve the aim of this thesis a Qualitative research methods are adopted through document review of case studies and on-site investigation, and also a critical literature reviews on these topics; Architectural conservation, adaptive reuse, international documents of conservation, authenticity, space, current agenda of conservation, current legal legislation of conservation in North Cyprus. Authenticity measurements stated by the Nara Document on Authenticity are detailed to extract the authentic spatial qualities of the case studies and accordingly proposals are anticipated for the future of these spaces, based on the analysis. The Fold and Folding Theory as a Conceptual Design Agent in Folding Architecture

In today’s design world, ‘the fold’ currently appears as an appealing concept or trend, mainly in terms of its aesthetic or structural values. However, ‘the fold’ also has a philosophical depth. The main problem this study addresses is related to the fact that, there is very little research done related to this theoretical aspect of the fold and far less research is done on the potential of the fold and the folding theory as a conceptual design agent for folding architecture. In his regard, this study looks at this potential, through a qualitative inquiry, with a case study research design approach. Firstly, the subject of the ‘fold’, its close concordance to the ‘origami’ paper folding technique, and its physical resonances such as structural and geometrical are introduced. Secondly, through Deleuze, who is famed as the ‘fold’ philosopher, the ‘fold’ is described from this original interpretation of philosophy. As a last step, the study looks at the incarnation process of the fold, from being a concept as a sense, into a physical/spatial phenomenon in architecture and interiors. As a basis for analysis, the work of Sophia Vyzoviti and her conceptual volumetric forms supporting Deleuze philosophy of ‘fold’ were used. These were matched with the works of two famed architects in the field of ‘folding architecture’. As a result, this thesis showed that when trying to understand the ‘fold’, it is insufficient to deal with merely the aesthetic values of the fold, especially in terms of architectural space design. Keywords: The fold, folding, folding theory, folding architecture, case study research.

Biomimicry: A Tool to Achieve Sustainability in Interior Spaces

Nowadays the world is facing serious environmental problems such as global warming, pollution of air, water and soil, floods and droughts. A big part of these problems is caused by unconscious and excessive consumption of world resources by human beings. The building industry in general has a major role in a lot of environmental problems. For this reason, it is very important that the architects and interior architects adopt more environmentally friendly and sustainable design strategies to reduce these problems. Sustainability in general can be described as meeting or satisfying the needs of the current generation without diminishing or compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. The concept of sustainability is very important in interior architecture as well. To ensure sustainability in interior spaces, it is first necessary to know the interiors with all their components, to know the expectation of sustainability in the interiors, and perhaps most importantly, to use a method that can create this. This is where biomimicry comes into play. The biomimicry method offers one of the most effective methods on the path to sustainability. The reason why biomimicry is powerful in terms of sustainability is that it derives its power from nature and the ability of natural organisms to survive for millions of years. This study has two main aims. The first aim is to determine what the environmental sustainability considerations in design of interior components are and to examine how biomimicry can help to achieve sustainability in interiors. As the first step of the study the sustainability requirements for various interior components and biomimicry design examples in the issues related to the interior architecture are searched. Then, a guide has prepared to be used by the interior architects where briefly the requirements to have sustainable interior components and examples of biomimicry designs that can help to achieve those goals are compiled. The study tends to create a tool to help interested interior designers in achieving more sustainable interior environments and to increase the use of biomimicry in interior architecture. Comparative Assessment of the Change in Privacy Levels in the Adaptive Reuse of Listed Iranian Traditional Houses from Qajar Era (1789 to 1925) According to Different Functions

In recent decades, adaptive reuse is one of the key strategies for conserving cultural heritage and its significance. Tabriz, as one of the historical cities of Iran, includes many cultural heritage sites and buildings. In this regard, the traditional houses of Tabriz, as a source of heritage values, play an important role in presenting these values to the present generations and transferring them for future generations as well. Therefore, the re-use of traditional Tabriz houses with new contemporary functions can be an effective way of conserving and expanding their heritage significance. Besides, privacy as an intangible aspect of culture has played a major role in the spatial organization of traditional Iranian houses and provided the hierarchy of access to the interior spaces. Therefore, setting the most appropriate function in terms of accessibility as a consequence of reusing traditional Iranian houses, provide the opportunity to sustain and present their heritage significance. In addition, limiting access (high level of privacy) is one of the obstacles that arise from the inappropriate private function, which may prevent presenting heritage significance. The purpose of this study is assessing the level of privacy in original and reused states of selected traditional houses in Tabriz in order to contribute to a better understanding of compatibility of the new function in terms of accessibility for both visitors and inhabitants within adaptive reuse of cultural heritage buildings. A combination of quantitative and qualitative approaches are used for the data collection and analysis in this research. The qualitative approach of the research contains the observation of each case study by taking the photo of component spaces. In addition, by considering the analytical approaches of “space syntax methodology”, “justified graphs” have been provided based on plans of each case. Likewise, the privacy layers graphs have been prepared according to the justified graphs. Numerical outputs related to the syntactic properties are calculated through Excel software. In addition, the comparison of the depth of each space are illustrated in linear charts and compared with privacy layers graphs both in original and reused states of Tabriz traditional houses from the Qajar period. The findings show that, by changing the use of these traditional houses, the level of privacy in interior spaces has been reduced. In this regard, the findings of the numerical analysis and “justified graphs”, which are obtained by space syntax methodology and the comparison of features such as the relative depth of spaces and the integration values, show that the depth of space (Privacy) has decreased in re-use mode. Besides, the graphs of privacy levels determine that the degree of privacy varies in the spatial organization of new contemporary functions such as cultural, educational, commercial, administrative function, etc.; which directly affect the level of access of both visitors and inhabitants to the interior spaces of the cultural heritage. Understanding the significance of nature as an integral part of interior design vis-a-vis kindergarten architecture

ABSTRACT: Realization over the importance of nature opened the way to question different aspects of human life and it was found that people start to spend more and more time indoors due to several reasons like safety, job-related factors or personal factors. This increase in spending time indoor is equal to spending less time in contact with nature. Thus, people started to look for ways to integrate nature in all aspects of their lives as much as they can. The significance of this research lies in the benefits of interaction with nature mainly for children who live in the apartments, without any contact or with too little contact with nature. Connection with nature will contribute for children's development physically, spiritually, socially. Therefore, more attempts should be create in order to bring nature into the indoor spaces. The study aims to explore the significance of nature as a significant tool in interior spaces design, specifically in kindergartens. It first looks at the relationship of nature and interior architecture/ design. Then it evaluates many kindergarten cases from different countries. Finally from the same perspective a local case "Levent kindergarten" is examples and the case study analysis was conducted according to the criteria derived from the books, an interview conducted with the architect, and questionnaire with teachers might support to understand the integration of nature in kindergarten from their views and opinion. A Model Proposal to Measure the Role of Design on the Sense of Place Achievement at Interior Spaces

ABSTRACT: Sense of Place is the attachment of people to a place while using it effectively. It refers to feelings of belonging to an environment, which is based on a spatial organization and identified design. To create a space which considers a unique belongingness of a human being is directly related to or/and applied with the space organization that considers the possible character of that space. So, the visual qualities as a primary sense which could be provided with physical characters; factors that affect perception, conceptual approaches, context of design, design based to its principles & elements that draw the character of the place is considered and are decisive factors on its appearance. When the physical aspects of space improve/ increase the quality level of an interior then the space provides a mirror effect to the human being perceiving it through his/her sensorial perfection and construct a developed theme of belonging which is one of the strengths of Sense of Plac formation. This thesis deals with the possible interaction between Sense of Place and Design at Interior Spaces. To provide a specification on this study it quests and responds; 1. Is it possible to discuss Sense of Place in Interior Spaces? It mainly aims to examine the interaction between Sense of Place and Design (Interior Design). 2. What is the relative interaction between Design (Interior Design) & Sense of Place? Additionally it aims to determine; 3. Is it possible to measure interaction between 'Design (Interior Design)' and 'Sense of Place (Interior Spaces)'? So, the effect/influence of design on Sense 4 of Place achievement considers exposing whether design has positive or negative effects/contributions on the achievement of Sense of Place in Interior Spaces through influencing the development of identity. As a result of the study carried out, evidences that are derived from this research support the existence of proper interaction between Sense of Place and Design; Sense of Place achiev ement in interior spaces and the possible measurement/ the measurability of this interaction. Rethinking Contemporary Library Environment as a Social Learning Centre

ABSTRACT: In the era of digitalization and dominance of Internet search, student needs related to contemporary academic library spaces have changed. In search of ways for answering these changing needs of students, most universities have started to transform their spaces. Architects and interior architects/designers have done little research to guide such a transformation. This study aims to overcome this gap by thoroughly examining and analysing existing literature and providing an in-depth investigation on Eastern Mediterranean University main library as a case. The research design is a “mixed methods” one, involving the combination of qualitative and quantitative research and data in the study. It starts as a qualitative one with onsite observations and informal interviews. The outcomes from this phase are used to construct the second quantitative phase at which the data are collected through structured questionnaires. The results reveal that, EMU main library does not fully coincide with the essential characteristics for contemporary academic libraries. The criteria of this research could be used as guidance for evaluating academic libraries, which need a transformation. As a conclusion, the study provides some suggestions to help EMU main library re-define its spaces and to reclaim its place on the campus. Applying color potentials assist spaces to be more successful in their functional purposes. This study is a primary effort to investigate the effects of color on human, in both color therapy and interior architecture and to help propose the best color application of the interior architecture of patient rooms in healing environments. In this research, information about the Color therapy, color`s fundamentals and effects on interior architecture are collected from credible architectural documents through library research. The investigated information is evaluated through a qualitative document analysis and presented via descriptive tables. Interior architectural references clarified the major role of color in human wellbeing, and present many explorations about color applications in interior spaces and patient rooms. Color therapy reveals the process of effecting color on human body and psyche based on chakras and their related colors. This information is combined in evaluation part by the researcher and some applications are proposed. Interior architectural sources proposed many color schemes in interior spaces, healing environment and patient rooms. In the evaluation part, after the analysis of the interior space and color therapy, there are some similarities in some cases with color therapy in aspect of physiological effects of color on special issues. In the cases that interior architectural sources suggest no color for special illness, color therapy can cover this absence for particular disease. Accordingly, Color therapy can aid interior architecture to employ color with new criterion to achieve purposes of the space, especially healing environments to play positive role in user’s condition and satisfaction in practice. Investigation of formal aesthetic elements in living spaces

Aesthetic is a natural factor, which is directly related to the emotions of human beings. Aesthetic can be a bridge between observation and emotions. It can easily effect the perception and cognition of users. Aesthetic have different elements which come together to create the sense of satisfaction for the viewers. The main elements of formal aesthetics are Form, Color, Texture, Lighting and Shadow. These elements can come together to create the sense of beauty but the way of using them are significant to achieve the correct solution. One of the purposes of design philosophy is to increase the quality of experience of human beings to know the aesthetic. By utilizing the main elements of formal aesthetics, this purpose can be reach at the end of the design process. In interior architectural spaces formal aesthetic elements can play an important role to give the sense of satisfaction and preference for users. The main elements are examined and emphasized in this study. The problem of this study is, it feels that, the formal aesthetic elements cannot be seen clearly in the duplex houses of Famagusta. These elements are not organized according to the user’s needs in most houses. The aim of this study is to discover the effects of formal aesthetics in living space organizations in duplex houses of Famagusta. By considering the values of formal aesthetics and different usage of formal aesthetic elements, this study will explore how formal aesthetic elements effect the living spaces of houses in Famagusta. Different methods used for this study are space syntax, classification technique, semantic rating scale and iii observation to reach the conclusion of this study. Also, this study is going to be limited to the main elements of formal aesthetic which are color, form, texture, light and shadow. Other limitations of this study is the five different parts of Famagusta which are Walled city, Dumlupınar, Sosyal Konutlar, Gülseren and Tuzla. In the first chapter of this study, the main problem of study mentioned is the lack of formal aesthetic elements in some design processes, which can affect the atmosphere in the interior spaces. The aim of the study is also covered in the first chapter, which is to discover the effects of formal aesthetic in living space organizations in the houses of Famagusta by considering the values of Formal Aesthetics. The main question of this study is: How formal aesthetic elements affect the living space of houses in the examples of Famagusta. Also limitations and research objectives took place in the first chapter, which is going to be explained further. In the second chapter, general information about architectural space and interior space is considered in terms of open, close and functional spaces. At the same time, Perception, interior spaces and space organization, emphasized in second chapter. In third chapter general information about aesthetic and elements of formal aesthetics are emphasized. Also the usage of these elements in interior spaces is researched in this chapter. In the fourth chapter, some duplex houses in different parts of Famagusta are selected as a case study. These cases are 20 duplex houses in the Walled City, Dumlupınar, Gülseren, Sosyal Konutlar and Tuzla. These cases are examined according to the different elements of formal aesthetic. The following techniques and scale measurements used for this study are: iv 1. Space Syntax: to find the location of living space in academic way of study. Also the connection of living room with the other functions examined in this method. 2. Semantic Rating Scale: which helped the study to find the LIKE and DISLIKE ideas of the users. 3. According to the results of the semantic rating scale, classification method was used to find the most and the least impressive elements of formal aesthetic 4. The last method of this study is observation in order to examine all the results. For supporting the observation method that is completed by the author, semantic differential is used by giving different adjectives to the formal aesthetic elements. At the end of these investigations, this study reaches the answers of does people like these living spaces? If yes, what is their first preference? And finally, the study, focused on observation to support the results of previous methods to find the most impressive elements of formal aesthetic in selected living spaces. According to the results, which are achieved at the end of the study, final conclusion can reach from this research. According to the findings, color is the first preferred element followed by form, then texture and the last one being lighting and shadow which users selected. Also about the existence of formal aesthetic elements in selected cases, it can be assumed that Tuzla has the most percentage of users using v these elements in living spaces shortly followed by Gülseren, then Dumlupınar, Sosyal konutlar and the last one was Walled City.

Understanding Territorial Behavior as a Key to Design of Formal Care Spaces for Children

Humanistic concerns about physical and cognitive features related to children are crucial to create proper environments for them and to enhance the quality of their lives. One of these concerns is about the impacts of children’s living spaces quality on their social-spatial behaviours. Since human personality is mostly formed in childhood, understanding and accepting not only functional needs, but also children’s behavioural needs is something vital in design of all kinds of spaces to be used by children such as day cares, schools, nurseries, homes, etc. This knowledge helps to arrange the physical components in children’s living place in a way to become capable to respond not only to children’s basic needs such as shelter, safety, protection etc. but also to satisfy the other needs which have great influences in quality of their lives such as territoriality, privacy, personal space, etc. In this respect, middle childhood (6-12 years old) is a critical stage with many changes in children’s behaviours and activities that transfers them to the adolescence needs thoughtful concern. Understanding child territory and territorial behaviour is one of these fundamentals, which is mostly overlooked in design of places for children. This concern becomes even more serious for children who are deprived of parental care for any reasons and live in alternative care. In this respect, one of the roles of architects and interior designers is to create well-designed spaces, which consider the fundamental need of having primary territory in places which children without parental care are accommodated and kept. This study focuses on territorial behaviour of children in general and particularly it focuses on children who are deprived of parental care. Also it provides a deep review on related concepts, which have great effect on child territoriality such as space, place, personal space, proxemics, attachment theory, privacy and personalization and also their impact on children social-spatial behaviour and well-being. As the case study, two branches of SOS Children’s Village as a family-base care organization in two countries, Northern Cyprus and Austria have been selected for observation and discussion about children territorial behaviour and its relation to the living space. Findings of this study may help designers and planners to notice and consider these important human needs, behaviours and principles to design spaces that support children proper development and well-being. Reconsideration of Opening Design in the Integration of Natural Light into Interior Space

ABSTRACT: Natural light was the main lighting sources before the invention of artificial lamps. After that, most of the designers started to design windowless buildings, which caused the consumption of a lot of fossil fuel besides its expensiveness. After 1960s, some of the architects started to re-think about natural lighting. They started to consider natural lighting in their design until the contemporary period. During the contemporary period, a design event affects architecture and forced architects and designers to be part of it with the invention of new technologies or materials. Therefore, for instance, it led to the emergence of digital architecture, where parametric design or fluid design arose as a result. This kind of architecture allows architects to design in any form, shape, and size where the priority was the shelter and functional role of opening more than the interior and its effects on the user or space. Therefore, together with the form, changes on opening and fenestration design affected the integration of natural light into interior spaces as well. In due course, this study discourses the role opening design has on the integration of natural light into the interior space. It gives priority to the effects of opening on the interior space more than the shelter of a building or the functional role of the openings. Accordingly, at first, this study emphasizes the need for reconsideration of openings and investigates different methods and techniques that openings can be designed. Then it evaluates the effects of various opening designs on the integration, natural light into an interior space and its effects on interior design / space besides the user. Considerations in Design of Interior Spaces for Autistic Children

Autism nowadays has become one of the most prominent neurological disorders around the world. Despite having many medical and psychological endeavors and educational programs autism rate is increasing annually. Autism is a neurological disorder that is why finding a definite treatment seems to be difficult. Furthermore, especially in developing countries there is a lack of information about autism and how to behave with autistics, for that, many autistics get no education and do not have a chance to communicate with other people. This creates social, economic, and psychological problems in society. From 2000s onwards there are few attempts to search about autistics’ needs in physical environment pertaining to architectural design. However, the disorder requires more research and observation to know which spatial qualities may enhance their performance in learning process, and encourage them to participate in the normal life. The Purpose of this study is to prepare a comprehensible design checklist for architects and interior designers to be used in design of spaces for autistics. The study focuses on children with autism at age 3-7 years while they are in preschools and kindergartens and preparing to go to primary schools. The design checklist is prepared based on the data obtained from literature survey as well as the information gained from the experts as psychologists, sociologists, and therapists who worked in autism centers and parents and siblings of autistics who answered the questionnaires. For that reason, two autism centers were chosen in Iraqi-Kurdistan as case studies. The result of this research is a collection of findings related to autistics’ sensitivities in space, related to their seven senses. More interpretations have been done to translate this information to find what makes autistics comfortable to be used in spaces and what makes them distracted to be avoided in the physical environment. This research highly recommends this design checklist to architects and interior designers who intend to design spaces for autistics, as it includes many design considerations for autistics based on a scholarly research. Keywords: Autism, sensitivity in autism, universal design, senses of space, autism and interior space.
