Bellek stratejilerinin kelime hatırlama üzerindeki etkileri konusunda deneysel bir çalışma

This study was conducted in order to investigate the effects of the use of memorystrategies in vocabulary instruction on students? success. To this end, the study wascarried out with students at the beginning level at the English Preparatory School atAbant İzzet Baysal University. In the research, an experiment group and a controlgroup, which consisted of a total of 51 students, were used. The study lasted for fiveweeks. During this period, one of the five memory strategies was focused on eachweek. The selected strategies were using keywords, using imagery, grouping, semanticmapping, and placing new words into a context.The researcher scanned the words in the coursebook in the three word lists which aremostly referred to and identified their frequencies. During the study, not only wasinformation on the strategies given but also they were used in instruction. In order todetermine the effects of the method used, experiment and control group were given pre- andpost- tests every week. These tests aimed to assess the effects of the strategies not only onreception of the words but also on the production of them. In addition, the researchercollected information about the students? opinions on the strategies .For the statistical analysis of data, paired-samples t- test method was used. As a resultof the analyses, significant increases were found in the scores of both the experiment groupand control group. However, when the two groups were compared, it was seen that theincrease in the scores of the experiment group was much higher. When it comes toidentifying learners? opinions about the strategies, it was found out that participants hadpositive opinions about them.
