Factors impacting sleep status of inpatients in surgical clinics

Abstract (EN)

Goal: Sleep is a complex, physiological basic need that is impacted by pathophysiological, physical, psychological and environmental factors. For this reason, identification and elimination of factors that prevent patients from sleeping comfortably and ensuring and maintaining normal sleep process are important initiatives of nurses. Materials and Methods: This study has been carried out to research the factors that impact the sleep status of inpatients in surgical clinics to establish basic data for nursing initiatives. The study includes 100 individuals who stayed in Special University Hospital between February- April 2016 for at least three days and who are aware of the place and time they are in, and who can respond to normal questions. Finding: 31% of the patients belonged to the age group of 18-29, 37% of the patients belonged to the age group of 30-39, 32% of the patients belonged to the age group of 40-49. 79% of the patients were on their third day after surgery, 21% of them were on their fourth day after surgery and 23% of their sleep was impacted by concern about their illnesses, 14% of it was impacted by noise, 24% of it was impacted by nausea, 18% of it was impacted by lack of appetite. Result: The research results obtained will be used in nursing and increasing the quality of nursing. Key Words: Sleep, Sleep Quality, Surgical Clinics, Factors Impacting Sleep, Patient
