Freedom during the first stages of the multiparty period: 1946-1954

This thesis, whose subject is the examination of the press policies put forward by CHP (Republican People's Party -RPP) and DP (Democratic Party) during the first stages of the multiparty system and how the period?s important newspapers approached the implemented press policies by the two parties; attempts to put forward the policies / regime applied to the press by the government during the important step of the transition to the multiparty system between 1946 ? 1954.Significant resources were investigated systematically during this study which aims at identifying the similarities and differences in the press policies implemented by the two different political parties in power during the 1946-1954 periods, mainly being the Republican People's Party and the Democratic Party. In the first part of the study, the concept of media democracy and press freedom association, its rights and limits are discussed in details. In the second section where the various aspects of the relationships between media and politics were set out, a wide range of information on the press regimes of the CHP and the DP was presented and a comparison between the two periods was made. In the third section, the crucial events in the view of the press and their reflections in the ?Cumhuriyet? (Republic), ?Ulus? (Nation) and ?Zafer? (Victory) news papers were investigated and presented with examples.As a result of the study, it was determined that different policies were applied to the press during the ruling periods of the different governmental powers. In addition, it was observed that there is a linear relationship between the healthy functioning of democracy and the freedom of the press; the political parties while in power, applied different approaches to that while in opposition position; when compared to the previous periods the press achieved more free environment during the transition to mutiparty political regime, the press policies implemented during the period of the DP (Democratic Party) coming to power provided more freedom to the press then those during the RPP (Republican People's Party)?s period.Keywords: Relationship between the Media Democracy, Freedom of the Press, Politics Media Relations, Press Regime during RPP period, Press Regime during DP period
