The impact of childhood trauma, coping with stress and social support on relaps in patients with substance use di̇sorder

This descriptive study was conducted in order to determine the effects of childhood traumas, coping and social support on relapse in substance use disorder patients. The research was conducted with 142 patients who received treatment at the Substance Addiction Treatment and Education Center between 30.12.2019-01.08.2020. The data of the study were collected using "Personal Information Form", "Childhood Trauma Scale (CTAS)", "Multidimensional Perceived Social Support Scale (MSPSS)" and "Stress Coping Styles Scale (SSTS)". The data were evaluated by making analysis in SPSS 24.0. As a result of the research; One of the sub-dimensions of the Stress Coping Styles Scale, a significant negative correlation was found between the Self-Confident Approach and the number of previous attempts to quit the substance (p <0.05). Between the age of first starting the substance and the Childhood Trauma Scale, Physical Abuse subscale negatively; A positive significant relationship was found between the physical neglect subscale and the number of attempts to quit the substance (p <0.05). Sterss Coping Styles Scale sub-dimension found a significant negative correlation between Desperate Approach and restarting the substance (p <0.05). There was no significant relationship between social support scale perceived as multidimensional and substance use characte ristics determining relapse. Approaches used in coping with stress and physical abuse in childhood, a history of physical neglect were found to affect the age of starting substance use, the number of attempts to quit the substance, and the time to start substance use again. It is thought when psychiatric nurses work with patients with substance use disorders, evaluating the traumas experienced by the patients, their coping styles and social support resources in this process will prevent relapse.
