Abstract (EN)
With the development of the internet and transportation systems, the interaction among people has increased globally. Thanks to these advances, language learners can instantly communicate with foreigners. However, they sometimes have difficulty communicating due to a lack of effective cultural activities to build intercultural competence in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classes. An innovative role-playing activity was designed in this study to prepare learners for real-life situations better and foster their cognitive, affective, and behavioral skills. Hence, this study aimed to explore the impact of designed negotiation role-playing activities on the intercultural competence of language learners. A quasi-experimental research design was applied to analyze the effectiveness of negotiation role-play activities on the intercultural competence levels of 12 preparatory class students enrolled in two preparatory classes at Ondokuz Mayıs University in the 2022-2023 spring semester over a five-week period. The experimental group participants received negotiation role-playing interventions, while the control group participants did not. To determine students' intercultural competence level and the effectiveness of the negotiation role-play activity, quantitative data were collected through the intercultural competence scale (ICS) developed by Chao (2014), and semi-structural interviews with voluntary participants provided qualitative data. Quantitative data were analyzed with SPSS statistical software, and qualitative findings obtained through semi-structured interview questions were organized, coded, and categorized using OneNote and MAXQDA software. The findings showed that the negotiation role-playing intervention significantly improved the experimental group's intercultural competence, particularly in the behavioral, knowledge, intercultural consciousness, and affective dimensions. The results of this study demonstrated that negotiation role-playing has great potential to enhance the intercultural competence of language learners and promote peaceful coexistence in a multicultural society.
