Abstract (EN)

Acinetobacter baumannii is one of the major bacteria that lead to nosocomial infections, particularly in intensive care units, with relatively high mortality. Acinetobacter baumannii has emerged as the most common cause of bloodstream infections in hospitalised patients. Bacterial resistance and virulence are the main factors linked to high mortality in patients with bloodstream infections. Acinetobacter baumannii have a lot of acquired and intrinsic resistance against to many antibiotics. The aim of this study is to evaluate the prevalence of Acinetobacter baumannii strains and their antibiotic susceptibility isolated from blood cultures. A total of 117 isolates identified from blood cultures between January 2018 and December 2019 from the Microbiology Laboratory of Tokat Gaziosmanpaşa University Research and Application Hospital were evaluated retrospectively. Blood culture samples were incubated in BACT / ALERT 3D automated system (bioMérieux, Marcy I'Etoile, France). Identification and antibiotic susceptibility of microorganisms were done with VITEK 2 (bioMérieux, France). Multidrug-resistant was defined as acquired resistance to at least one antimicrobial agent from three or more antimicrobial categories. Acinetobacter baumannii were detected from patients of which 59.8% (70 cases) were males (sex ratio = 1.9) and 40.2% (47 cases) were female. The patient's median age was 67.31 ± 15.11 years. The majority of Acinetobacter baumannii positive blood culture samples (90.6%) were obtained from the intensive care unit. Multidrug-resistant isolates were identified from 88.9% of the samples. The highest antibiotic resistance rate was seen to meropenem with 55% and to imipenem (79.5%). The resistance rate to colistin was 17.1%. All of the isolates were susceptible to tigecycline. Gender, age, and type of clinic had no significant relationship with the prevalence of MDR strains (p>0.05). Tigecycline and colistin may be the first choice to treat infections caused by Acinetobacter baumannii in this geographic area. Because of the increasing antibiotic resistance, analyzing epidemiological data for each center regularly should be useful for the development of rational antibiotic use policies.
