Abstract (EN)
This study was planned and conducted with an aim to observe the impacts of caffeine consumption habits on the quality of life in adults applied to a sports center in Istanbul, Beşiktaş between 18 and 65 years of age, determine the caffeine-related effects and their frequency of caffeine consumption, gain knowledge on caffeine consumption habits and measure knowledge level on caffeine. The study was carried out with a total of 129 adult individuals, 76.7% female, whose ages varied between 18 and 65. A questionnaire and a 24-hour retrospective food consumption record were used as data collection tools. The SF-36 Quality of Life Scale was used to examine the quality of life of the participants. When the BMI groups of the participants are examined, 42.6% of them were found to be of normal weight. It was identified that 71.3% of the participants thought that they knew about foods containing caffeine, 76.7 of them indicated that they did not know about the daily caffeine intake amount (mg), and 76.7% of them thought that they did not consider themselves to be caffeine addict. It was confirmed that 55% of the participants consumed caffeinated foods and beverages in the morning. 34.9% of the participants stated that they felt more vigorous after consuming caffeine, while 24% of the participants stated that they showed symptoms such as high heartbeat and palpitations after consuming caffeine-containing products. It was found out that the mean score of the individuals who felt less sleepy in the "Energy/Vivacity/Vitality" sub-dimension score after caffeine consumption was statistically higher than the individuals who felt more energetic (p<0.005). The results of the analysis carried out to determine whether the SF-36 scores differ based on the caffeine consumption (mg) groups of individuals demonstrated that there was no significant difference (p>0.05) in all sub-dimensions of the scale. When the daily macronutrient consumption percentages of the participants are analyzed according to the Turkish Dietary Guidelines (TÜBER), it is observed that the protein consumption (g) percentage of male individuals is 84.4%, CHO consumption (g) percentage is 69.4%, and fat consumption (g) percentage is 118.8%; and that female students' protein consumption (g) percentage is 100.1%, CHO consumption (g) percentage is 62.4%, and fat consumption (g) percentage is 121.4%. According to the results of the study, it was detected that SF-36 scores did not change according to the caffeine consumption (mg) groups of individuals. It has been concluded that individuals have insufficient information about the daily caffeine intake amount. The level of awareness of individuals about the recommended daily intake of caffeine and the amount of caffeine in food and drinks should be increased.
