Representation of women in the national cinema movement in Turkish cinema

Cinema, as a representation of the society and culture in which it is produced, makes many aspects of the individuals and groups that make up the society visible, from their lifestyles to their worldviews, through the language of film. This study focuses on the films of the National Cinema movement, which have succeeded in gaining a place for themselves by separating from different views and themes in Turkish Cinema. The national cinema movement brought the theme of religion to our cinema. This movement, which frequently includes religious elements and figures, has a different image in terms of female representations. In addition to the representation of a good wife, devoted and compassionate mother, the representation of a believing Muslim woman has been added. In the first part of our study, which consists of three main parts, it has been tried to explain what representation is and how women are represented in our cinema. In the second part, the currents in Turkish cinema are briefly discussed and the framework of the national cinema movement is tried to be drawn. The reasons that reveal the national cinema, the representative directors of the movement are explained. Last part, information is given about the films selected among the films of the national cinema movement, and how women are represented in these films is tried to be examined in detail. The female characters of the national cinema differed from the characters on the screen with their perspectives, worldviews and clothing. While the headscarf made these women visible in their religious and political representations, it also gained a place in cinematic expression.
