Abstract (EN)

In order to ensure continuity in production with the developing technology, a shift system was required. While it is an advantage that the system in shifts ensures continuity in production, it is an important problem in terms of health that working individuals live against their daily routines. This research was conducted with a survey method in order to determine the effect of working in a shift system on the sleep quality and eating habits of employees. This research was conducted with 159 (120 women, 39 men) individuals working in shifts in a canned food factory in Büyükçekmece, İstanbul. The data obtained from the face-to-face survey form carried out among the individuals participating in the study and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) scale were statistically evaluated using the "SPSS 22.0" package program. The mean PSQI score was 4.81 ± 2.75. A statistically significant difference was found when the relationship between the participants' adequate and balanced nutritional status (p=0,025), participants' skipping at least one snack (p=0,018), their caffeine consumption during the night shift (p=0,006) and their sleep quality was analyzed. It was determined that the sleep quality of the participants who said that they had a sufficient and balanced diet was better than those who said they didn't. It has been observed that those who skip at least one main meal have worse sleep quality than those who don't. Those who consume caffeine during night shift have worse sleep quality than those who don't. When the effect of shift work on employees' nutrition and weight gain was examined, no statistically significant difference was found (p> 0.05). As a result, information was obtained in our study that sleep quality affects eating habits, and it was determined that more studies examining the relationship between sleep quality and eating habits are needed.
