Socio -culturel change in İstanbul during the Democratic Party Period

After the 1950 elections in Turkey has experienced a new period of power of the Democratic Party. Between 1950 and 1960, Istanbul under the Democrat Party underwent significant socio-cultural changes. Politically, the policy of rapprochement with American and Western countries has been influential in the emergence of social and cultural developments. Especially in Istanbul, we see that this change was realized quite clearly. After the events of 6-7 September 1955, Istanbul has undergone major changes in socio-cultural terms. As a result of non-Muslim citizens going to other countries, there was a clear gap. The government, by trying to take measures related to the issue, initiated efforts to meet the damages. Nevertheless, some of our citizens, especially Greeks were significantly affected by the events. In the fifties, Istanbul continued to be in the forefront as a fashion, art and shopping center. Women's magazines played a decisive role in this period when world fashion was closely followed. In this period, some changes were observed in the eating and drinking culture. In the areas such as music, cinema and theater Istanbul is a city where changes can be observed easily in the fifties. In the fifties, many areas of art, including art, are influenced by the Western art, but it is understood that the traditional values have been preserved. The increase in the population of Istanbul in the fifties brought many problems. At the same time, modernization of the city and remarkable historical artifacts were highlighted. In this period, although the influence of America and Western culture played a decisive role in social and cultural aspects, it was understood that the values of Turkish culture were tried to be preserved. Adnan Menderes and the Democratic Party have supported the modernization and development to a great extent. In this study, the factors affecting the socio-cultural changes in Istanbul during the Democratic Party period are examined.
