Abstract (EN)

Patients with chronic renal failure are at a substantially elevated risk of developing cardiovascular diseases. In present study among patients with diabetic and non-diabetic stage 3-4 chronic renal failure, the relation of Nt-proBNP with echocardiography, electrocardiography and blood pressure have been evaluated.Material - Method64 patients with diabetic and non-diabetic stage 3-4 chronic renal failure who were treated in 2009 in Dicle University Faculty of Medicine Research and Practice Hospital, clinic of nephrology or who consulted to nephrology polyclinic for their routine follow-ups and treatments have been included into present study. Blood samples have been taken from the patients for biochemical, hormonal and hematological parameters. In the 24-hour urines of examined patients, proteine and creatinin have been measured. Patients? electrocardiography and echocardiography have been taken and their blood pressures have been measured.FindingsNo significant difference has been detected between diabetic (n=28) and non-diabetic (n=38) groups in terms of Nt-proBNP (p=0.821). Mean Nt-proBNP values (521.12±265.30, 488.87±253.36 respectively) of diabetic and non-diabetic phase-4 group has been found to be substantially higher (p<0.001) than stage-3 group (186.13±144.36, 133.58±111.08 respectively). No correlation of echocardiography, electrocardiography and blood pressure with Nt-proBNP has been detected within diabetic and non-diabetic groups (in diabetic group r=0.102, p=0.135, r=0.219, p=0.720, r=0.073, p=0.412 respectively, in non-diabetic group r=0.105, p=0.531, r=0.237, p=0.152, r=0.131, p=0.432 respectively). A positive correlation has been found with Nt-proBNP level and both proteinuria and chronic renal failure stages (in diabetic group r=0.442, p=0.015, r=0.689, p<0.001 respectively, in non-diabetic group r=0.473, p=0.003, r=0.528, p<0.001 respectively).ConclusionIn chronic renal failure, an elevated disease stage and proteinuria level give way to a heightened Nt- proBNP level. While examining cardiovascular diseases in patients with chronic renal failures, in addition to Nt-proBNP, echocardiography, electrocardiography and blood pressure values should also be considered.Key Words: Chronic Renal Failure, Nt- proBNP, Cardiovascular Disease, Diabetes,
