Linguistic features of Ibn Atiyya's work 'al-Muharraru'l-Wajîz fî Tafsîr al-Kitâb al-'Azîz'

As a result of the high importance given to the interpretation of the Qur'an and other Qur'anic sciences in the 5th and 6th centuries, significant works were authored in these disciplines. One of the most prominent of these works is the philological interpretation of Ibn 'Atiyye called al-Muharraru'l-wajîz fî tafsîr al-kitâb al-'azîz. Ibn 'Atiyye brought together the views of predecessor language scholars about thei'râb (inflections and last vowels) of the Qur'an verses. Besides, he handled with the morphological analyses of those words, made long explanations about the derivation of the words, brought evidences from poetic verses and made comprehensive linguistic descriptions. Briefly, in this work, he gave place to the issues such as grammar, syntax, language, rhetoric, dialects, recitations etc. Giving importance to hearing / sam' and comparison / qiyaas, ibn 'Atiyye took the common usage into account. Not being a follower of any syntax schools bigotedly, ibn 'Atiyye mostly adopted the views of the Basra school in his choices. Nevertheless, he criticized the linguists of Basra in some issues and inclined to the views of other linguists. Sometimes reciting principles and sometimes giving sample sentences, ibn 'Atiyye explained the literary arts seen in the Qur'an verses. This study aims at evaluating the work of al-Muharraru'l-wajîz fî tafsîr al-kitâb al-'azîz, tackling its philological aspects with a linguistic approach.
