Abstract (EN)

The lifestyles, cultures, and social lives of the pre-Islamic Arab people, who were the first recipients of Islam, have been studied extensively. During the period when the Qur'an was revealed, it aimed to reconstruct society in an Islamic way. In order to understand the innovations and changes it brought about in society, it is necessary to know the social and cultural values of the initial recipients, that is, the people of the pre-Islamic era. Our study, titled "The Pre-Islamic Customs Abolished by the Qur'an," attempts to define and determine the Qur'an's approach to the customs of the pre-Islamic era shortly before and during the time of the Prophet Muhammad. The aim is to identify the customs that Islam did not accept during that period by explaining how the Qur'an interacted with and fought against certain societal practices. In our thesis, the innovations made by the Qur'an in the areas of belief, worship, and social spheres are expressed based on the verses. It can be said that the Qur'an did not completely abolish all the customs of the pre-Islamic era. It has been determined that customs contradicting the essence of Islam were abolished, while those customs that were not contradictory were not invalidated. Practices such as idol worship and killing of female infants were abolished, while virtues such as generosity and altruism continued.
