Sabûhî Ahmed Dede's commentary on Masnavi titled İhtiyârât-i Sabûhî (Volume IV.-VI.) (analysis-critical text-glossary)

İhtiyârât-ı Sabûhî is a Mesnevi-i Ma'nevî expound penned by Sabûhî Ahmed Dede in the 17th century. The purpose of the expound is to prove the comformity of the Mesnevî with the Qur'an and sunnah by annotating the couplets in the Mesnevî containing the verses and hadiths, it is to clarify Arabic couplets and intricate couplets in Mesnevî. By means of this expound, it is also aspired to make Mesnevî easy, and to grasp it in an accurate and effortless way for the new students in the Mevlevi Lodge. Transcripts of İhtiyârât-ı Sabûhî have been identified and obtained. Since the author's own transcript cannot be found despite all the researches, a pedigree study has been carried out for the critical text. After the fundamental transcript and the copies to be included in the criticism are determined, the critical text has been prepared. Subsequently, information detected regarding Sabuhî ve İhiyârât-ı Sabûhî are given and text analysis has been initiated. An examination herein has been made in terms of the method of expound, language and stylistic features along with some inferences have been made. It is observed that the work is compatible with the purpose of writing in terms of not only expound method, also language and style. Majorly, Sabuhî included quite a lot of verses and hadiths quotations in his expound compared to other expounds. Methods such as parables, poetical and prosaic quotations, and grammatical explanations used in the expound serve for particular purposes like supporting the commentator's thought, proving it, and bringing fluency to the style. In addition to this, the commentator uses a remarkable amount of inverted and incomplete sentences, made grammatical errors and includes sentences connected with "in other words". These are also indications that İhtiyârât-ı Sabûhî holds the quality of a lecture note. For these reasons, it is not possible to see a systematic approach both in the method of expound and in language and style features. The critical text of İhtiyârât-ı Sabûhî which is an genuine text in terms of purpose among the Mesnevî expounds is prepared, and language and style analysis is made with the commentary method by this study Thus, another missing piece about Mesnevî expounds is attempted to be completed.
