Morpometrical comparison of medical faculty students' 2:4 finger ratio and nose structure

Objective: The middle part of the face is aesthetically important and the nose structure is the most important part of this region. In addition, the nose is an important anatomical marker that can provide information on issues such as ethnicity, age and race. In our study, we aimed to morphometrically investigate the correlation between the 2D:4D ratio in young people and the anatomical structure of the normal nose. Method: The study was conducted on 205 (Female: 127, Male: 78) students aged 18-25, height 150 cm-189 cm, weight 42 kg-90 kg and above, studying at Ankara Yıldırım Beyazıt University Faculty of Medicine. After obtaining the sociodemographic information of the participants, height and weight measurements were taken. In the study, morphometric measurements of the hand and nose region were also measured and recorded by the same researcher. Then, the BMI of the volunteers was calculated. In addition, the volunteers in the study were divided into eight groups for age, four for height, six for weight, and four for BMI. Statistical analysis was performed and p<0.05 was considered significant. Results: Demographic data of the participants were first obtained in the study. Then, parametric data of the hand and nose were measured and recorded. The mean and standard deviations of the demographic and parametric data obtained according to gender, age, height, weight and BMI were calculated. Then, hand and nose parameters were statistically evaluated according to gender, age, height, weight and BMI. As a result of the evaluation, statistically significant differences were found between the parameters (p<0.05). Conclusion: The data we obtained as a result of the study will contribute to the development of the nose, sex determination in forensic medicine and the diagnosis and treatment of pathologies related to the nose. It will also assist clinicians dealing with this region in describing the anatomical points when planning any operation related to the nose.
