Tarsus newspaper in the history of Turkish press (23 June 1925-22 March 1926)

The main responsibility of press is to observe things happening around the people and to clearly report the incidents that are important for the society to the readers. In fact, this situation results from people's desire and need to know the incidents which may potentially influence them. Local press, which deals with regional issues, particularly those in provinces and districts, is the media that primarily fulfils the responsibility to inform. Local press is also an important means of communication that contributes to the development of the region and country where it is broadcast. Therefore, local press inevitably exists in democratic societies. Press is regarded as an important structure in democratic societies because it has the function of reporting news, controlling the ruling power and molding public opinion. Like mainstream press, local press has the function of monitoring local administration. Local press, which informs the public about municipal activities and the events in the city, evaluates public responses to the activities and bring them up to the agenda. The newspaper named 'Tarsus Gazetesi', which started its publication following the declaration of the Second Constitutional Monarchy, draws attention as a local newspaper that deals with news in and around Tarsus and establishes its own point of view. Spelling and composition mistakes that are thought to have arisen from lack of technical facilities in printing and publishing of the time, obstructed readability of the newspaper to a certain extent. Nevertheless, despite all these difficulties, a total of 110 pages and 55 issues of the newspaper between 23rd June 1925 and 22nd March 1926 could be read. This study is divided into five parts namely political news, administrative and legal news, social news, educational news and financial news published at the time, and it draws a conclusion in line with the analyses of these parts.
