New York Üniversitesi profesörü Nicholas Mirzoeff'un görsel kültüre ilişkin çalışmalarından esinlenerek, Türkiye'deki politik, ekonomik ve toplumsal gelişmeler ışığında görsel aktivizm değerlendirilmiştir.
David Mitchell's Black Swan Green and the childhood perspective of the formative process within and beyond the postmodern context
This thesis points out those characteristics of Postmodernism and postmodern fiction which would be most congenial in the approach to a particular type of novel, which is the Bildungsroman. The aim of the thesis is to identify certain postmodern elements that makes David Mitchell's novel Black Swan Green a postmodern Bildungsroman and to demonstrate how, as a bildungsroman, it belongs to the postmodern context. Mitchell's fiction, which is considered experimental and innovative by the literary critics, is analysed by looking at the narrative and thematic aspects of the novel in postmodern context and, at the character dynamics in the story which is very essential for the overall meaning of the story. For this reason, the study reflects on how the main characters, especially the child characters, are represented in a postmodern environment, and how the people interact with such an environment. Key words: Postmodern fiction, Bildungsroman, experimental, child characters, Postmodern Bildungsroman.
Mark Ravenhill'in oyunlarindaki mitsel motifler
The focus of this study is to discuss the mythical motifs in Mark Ravenhill's plays; Shopping and Fucking, Faust is Dead and Some Explicit Polaroids, in relation to their positioning in the postmodern culture with the liberal capitalist systems. The concepts of relationships as a site of economic exchange, the quality of choice in market economies, free will, subject, knowledge and power are investigated through the theories of prominent postmodernist philosophers such as Gilles Deleuze, Felix Guattari, Michel Foucault and Francois Lyotard. Moreover, the provocative nature of the plays as a part of being representative of in-yer-face theatre is further explained in its historical and socio-cultural context. Such investigation not only brings political issues to the forefront, emphasizing the cultural change and its impact on individual lives but also the change in theatrical concepts of their milieu. Shopping and Fucking investigates the autonomy of the individual, the idea of sacrifice and suffering as a way to come to self-realization, the body as a place of control in authenticating the self and sexual relationships as a site of transaction. Faust is Dead explores the issues such as alienation, the loss of faith in the progress of man, the authenticity of experience, desire and the reconcilability of the phenomenal and noumenal worlds. In the last play, Some Explicit Polaroids examines the hedonism and the capitalist values that the younger generations adopt, contrasted with the values of older generations, the positivist decay experienced by twenty-somethings which is also a part of capitalism, the masculinity crisis, violence and abuse on the body and the transition from disciplined to controlled societies. Also, shopping myth which was found to be encompassing all the plays was inverted by the playwright through transforming the act of shopping from being personal and limited to the objects to be public and including humans and their emotions.
In 1977, Serge Doubrovsky invents the term autofiction to qualify his own practice initiated in Fils. In the bur accompanying the book we can read this: "Fiction, of events and facts strictly real; autofiction if you will, of having entrusted the language of an adventure to the adventure of language, out of the wisdom and the syntax of the novel, traditional or new". Being anchored both in fiction and reality, the stake of the autofiction is above all literary. Indeed, literary criticism has been trying to define the boundaries of this new literary object. We notice a radical change in the stylistic approach where, the linear style is abandoned in favor of broken story, presenting a new syntax which purpose is to bring out different sounds and meanings. Today, autofiction is the postmodern form of the questions the authors ask themselves about their identity, their intimacy. Thus, to carry out this research we chose three Autofiction authors: Philippe Forest, Marie Darrieussecq and Serge Doubrovsky. All three have their own theory on autofiction. This work has two parts. First, we will consider autofiction through the theoretical debate it raises. We will analyze the various definitions the authors have put forward, thus exploring the richness of the concept. We will then discuss the postmodern era in which this new literary genre emerged. In the second part, we will focus on the analysis of the following works: L'Enfant Eternel, Fils and Le Bébé. We will try to see how these authors put their theories into practice through their novels. Ultimately, we will seek to understand why authors of autofictions feel the need to go through the theory to accompany their stories.
Anti odipus figür olarak Tristram Shandy
Tristram Shandy is one of the most discussed novels in English language literature since the day it was written. For instance, at the time of its writing; Samuel Johnson, one of the most distinguished names in English literature, was skeptical of this work. He thought that nothing awkard would be permanent. Similarly, contemporary critics of Sterne found his novel to be strange, unusual, and unsuccessful in terms of unconventional narrative techniques. In contrast, Tristram Shandy has still inspired many literary theories, post-modern narrative technique and anti-hero examples, despite more than two centuries since the day it was written. Long before postmodern literary criticism, Sterne problematized the mimetic reality, the myth of integrity, linearity, and the archetype of the hero's journey that the odipal hero completes to reach inheritance, law, and phallus. He has presented a successful parody. Using Don Quixote and other bildungsroman hero parodies, he presented a satirical collage. He glorified the hero's grotesque image of the body, the plane of immanence beyond the self, and the body without organs against the Father's obsession with completeness and perfection. In this context, Tristram Shandy is not disciplined by imperfection, loss, and lack, on the contrary, as a meta-reflexive hero who is aware of his fictional reality, he without hesitation deciphering his fictionality. As a result, Tristram Shandy is a parody, an anti-odipal hero who has been against the concept of hero-subject under the burden of objectification and of guilt and odipal ideals. Media shaping identity in post-colonial context in Swing Time by Zadie Smith
Hamlet in a Nutshell: McEwan's novel Nutshell as a postmodern rewriting
As a postmodern rewriting of Shakespeare's one of the most essential plays, Nutshell narrates the story of an unborn baby whose parents go through the same tragedy as Hamlet's did. Hamlet has been examined mainly under the light of Freudian studies, regarding the issue of Oedipus Complex which can also be observed in Nutshell. It is fundamental to delve into the relationship between the mother and the protagonist of each of the works to compare them in terms of the complicated feelings and motivations. While doing so, the references to the senses should be surveyed closely since they play a very important role in communication. Because, the lack of the sense of sight would be affecting the connection between the characters and bring a new dimension to the story especially when the protagonist happens to be an unborn baby in Nutshell. Since women characters step forth due to their significance in both works, their conditions ought to be reviewed to comment on how they are represented and treated and whether they are affected by male domination in any way. This paper thus aims to examine all the mentioned concerns under certain subtitles, relating them to Hamlet and Nutshell while spotting the similarities and differences. Key Words: Hamlet, Oedipus Complex, Freud, Nutshell, Postmodernism
Michel Houellebecq is currently one of the most widely read contemporary French authors worldwide. It is clear that Houellebecq describes the decline of Western society and the loss of identity of postmodern society to the world. Michel Houellebecq's social postmodernist novel La Carte et Le Territoire focuses on the changes and upheavals of the 1950s and 1975s, which led to the emergence of a consumer society and a society of individualists. Houellebecq clearly criticizes the situation of man enslaved by the objects that perpetually surround him, and which are the consequences of the industrial revolution, capitalism and technology that transform man and the world towards an unexpected decadence. The novel shows the decline of Western society, as the emergence of capitalism, the consumer society and the deterioration of current human relations have undoubtedly deeply affected human life. However, the socio-economic crises, the disasters created by the two world wars and the great technological and scientific changes of the twentieth century put an end to the happiness of man in the future. Therefore, postmodernism aims to criticize all situations that have dehumanized man from his happiness and his hope for the future. This work aims to study Michel Houellebecq's La Carte et Le Territoire as a novel of postmodern social anticipation that relates the decadence of man in the next 30 years.
A cultural analysis of humor: David Lodge's Campus Trilogy in the postmodern context
Even if there is no conclusive definition or a fully comprehensive theory of humor, it is a very common and effective tool in literature. As one of the most prominent satirists, David Lodge expertly uses humor to present the distrait situation of academy. This study analyzes Lodge's unique presentation of humor through applying various approaches and theories to Campus Trilogy. This study looks at the humor of Campus Trilogy from a postmodern cultural perspective. An extensive research has been carried out to provide a different perspective on humor and the trilogy. Firstly, Veatch's Benign Violation Theory (BVT) was observed in 'Changing Places'. Secondly, carnivalesque elements of 'Small World' was analyzed. Lastly, Baldwin's Scholastikos was handled within the context of 'Nice Work'. Even though the analyses of the three books under cultural humor seem to be irrelevant to each other, which is an expected outcome considering the scope of Lodge's campus trilogy, they are complementary parts of cultural theory. This study aims to develop a new understanding of cultural humor, which can be a topic for further research beneficial for understanding the dynamics of humor better.
Building identity within and beyond the urban background: Three Brothers by Peter Ackroyd as a bildungsroman
This thesis aims to disclose the formation of an individual identity as a process encompassing various experiences among which is the urban experience determining the building and assertion of 'identity'. Relaying on the most recent theories of psychogeography, the present thesis studies the interconnectedness between the individual mind and the urban background as a means of formative principle in constructing an individual identity. Although identity is viewed as eroded and indefinable in postmodernism, psychogeography endeavours to discover if the territory in which an individual located affects the mood and/or attitude of the individual in means of a search for the identity. In this study, Peter Ackroyd's Three Brothers, as a postmodern Bildungsroman, is analysed through the framework of psychogeography and the analysis indicates that there is an evident relationship with the identity and the urban background. This paper contributes to recent debates in the literature on identity and its indefinability concerning the postmodern thoughts by offering a new perspective. Keywords: Bildungsroman, Identity, Peter Ackroyd, Postmodernism, Psychogeography
This study aims to examine literary collage practises in Georges Perec's novel Life A User's Manual within the context of postmodern literary and novel theories and intertextual relations. Postmodern literary theories categorize certain literary elements observed in literary works, particularly since the second half of the 20th century, according to their definitions and common characteristics. The term "collage", which originated in the plastic arts, particularly in painting, refers in its broadest sense, to the process of combining various heterogeneous elements on a surface. Fragmentation, discontinuity, rupture and heterogeneity, which are the defining qualities of postmodern text, enable an analogical relationship between these texts and the collage method in plastic arts. Postmodern texts are mostly formed by combining diverse heterogeneous elements, text and discourse pieces, similar to the collage approach in plastic arts. Accordingly, the term "collage" is one of the terms used by postmodern literary theory/theorists to define the postmodern text. With the fragmentation, discontinuity, rupture and heterogeneity that it generates in the text, intertextuality is one of the dominant elements which creates the collage image in the postmodern text. Postmodern writers, who are detached from the tenets of modern art such as breaking ties with the imitation principle and tradition or the idea of a genius creative writer creating an original and unique work with his or her own style, compose their works by combining fragments from the literary tradition and various texts. In this context, the postmodern text looks like a collage of fragments taken from previous works. The purpose of this study is to examine literary collage practises within the framework of Georges Perec's postmodern novel(s) Life A User's Manual, created by combining various intertextual and graphic elements based on the puzzle metaphor.
"Yetmez Ama Evet"in düşünsel arkaplanı olarak post-Kemâlizm
Reading Ian McMillan as a postmodern British poet
British poetry that is produced after 1960s coincides with the same period when postmodernism as a philosophical attitude dominated all fields of life and especially literature. The British poet Ian McMillan's poetry is influenced by postmodernism of the period and it practices postmodern devices. Some of these are parody, pastiche, stylistic mélange and playful inventiveness. McMillan's poetry deconstructs the normative understanding of traditional poetry and reconstructs a postmodern poetry which employs its devices to create new grounds for poetry to exist. Accordingly, this thesis analyses Ian McMillan's poetry collections A Chin? (1991) and Jazz Peas (2014) in accordance with their use of postmodern devices so as to illustrate what makes Ian McMillan a postmodern poet and to what extent his poetry represents postmodern British poetry. In Chapter I, McMillan's use of formal postmodern devices in his poems are studied and it is argued that the selected poems in A Chin? show that McMillan's attitude towards postmodernism in his early work deals with the political concerns of its time as well as employing formal postmodern devices in the poems. Chapter II argues that McMillan employs postmodern devices and experiments with postmodern poetry to extend the use of postmodernism in poetry. Thus, this shows that the political concerns of the first collection shift towards aesthetic concerns about the condition of postmodernism in poetry in Jazz Peas. Hence, this thesis argues that the practices of postmodernism through formal postmodern devices that are observed in A Chin? and the use of formal postmodern devices as well as experimentation with postmodernism in Jazz Peas make McMillan a postmodern British poet. It is observed that McMillan's A Chin? is concerned with the political matters as well as the aesthetic ones whereas Jazz Peas problematizes the aesthetic practice of postmodernism in poetry.
The reflection of postmodern literature in pinter's plays
Pinter?s plays have always caught the attention of the critics with its pauses, silences, ambiguities, and intruders that create paranoid and alarming atmosphere in his plays. His plays are often regarded as blurred, incomplete, chaotic, and obscure by many of the audiences/readers as well as by critics. As a matter of fact, all these adjectives that are attributed to Pinter?s plays are characteristics of postmodernism. As Pinter?s plays are the work of the postmodern era, they are unique samples to see the effects of this period on literature, especially in drama. These effects are the underlying reasons that make Pinter?s plays unclear and ambiguous. The aim of this study is to explore the reflection of postmodern literature in Pinter?s two plays. To achieve this, the characteristics of postmodern literature, the ones which are especially emphasized by many authors and critics, will be explained one by one. Then, Pinter?s The Homecoming and The Hothouse will be examined in the light of these features. In many of Pinter?s plays, intruders, power struggles, pauses and silences have been the leading topics to study on separately. However, while analyzing the two plays within the light of the postmodern literature, situations that support the topics mentioned above will be used as an example for the sake of presenting different perspectives in the study. For this reason, the plays will be analyzed within the light of the generally accepted features of postmodern literature which are language games, the fall of metanarratives, parody, irony, writerly text. Key Words: language games, parody, irony, writerly text, the fall of metanarratives
Catholicism as an obstacle, or fostering, feminism in the twenty-first century
This thesis is addressed to our generation and to future ones, where - especially in the rich Western countries - respect for the person in all of his/her social, cultural, religious and emotional complexity is becoming lost. Our choice of this Thesis topic is influenced by the fact that never before our modern age have we witnessed such an attack on the family - in which the woman plays a key role. She is, in our opinion, the mortar that holds together the bricks that make up our civilized society. Hyper-reality has taken the place of reality, and the map has become the territory, as Boudrillard claimed; history is no longer based on the "verum ipsum factum" of G.B. Vico, but rather on the "interpretation of fact" anticipated by Nitzche and continued until the present postmodernism era. The division between "res cogitans" and "res extensa" of Descartes in the sixteenth century, which still influences Western thought, led to the extreme result of the exaltation of the object over the subject, and of the body over the spirit. We have reached a point of complete objectification and commmodification of the body in a society where production and reproduction of the object are the idols held as necessary for the welfare of the modern globalized world. In this situation, the wellness of the individual has a priority over the well-being of the collective, and the slogan "the body is mine and I manage it", especially among women, is the focus of a lot of commentary in both the literary and media fields, and also amongst politics and law. We are witnessing a "globalization of indifference" towards anything that does not produce wealth. In our time, it seems that nothing can be opposed to the ideology of "pensèe unique" or "weak thought" which tends to give the impression that the preferences of individuals have the same status as their rights. We argue in this Thesis that this ideology leads to a culture of weak and restricted thoughts, based solely on personal preferences and conformed to the spirit (logic) of the world that seeks to make humanity into a thoughtless mob – totally lacking in real freedom. Most of all, however, this ideology suggests to humanity a very dangerous offer in proposing a prêt-à-porter ['ready to wear'] way of thinking according to personal taste: 'I think as I like!' and therefore, "I do as I please". This individualist way of thinking, mainly based on the objectification of the human being, is one of the most divisive and dangerous elements to be introduced into our society. In fact, it is taking those of us who are living in the current post-modern globalized world into a "globalization of indifference" where the relationship with the other is being killed - leaving each person, and especially women – alone, and suffering unaccompanied through their existential problems. From the seventies onward, feminist lay movements have claimed roles for women that are vigorously different from the stereotype of the "mother-wife" and "angel of the house" (as Virginia Woolf cited in her work, "A Room of One's Own") and have violently attacked the Catholic Church and accused it of misogyny and carrying out a "demonization" of the female body and its sexuality. In fact, for a long time, when scholars studied the sources of anti-feminism, they considered Judeo-Christian culture as a primary obstacle to the emancipation of women. Certainly, from the origins of Judeo-Christian practices until modern times, the relationship between men and women has been of the patriarchal type. This was justified and supported by a male interpretation of the Bible, which for centuries led women to live in a marginalized and often servile relation to men. And in this context, lay feminist movements consider Italy to be one of the most anti-feminist countries in Europe, due to its obedience to the Pope, and its adherence to the Magisterium of the Church in defense of the natural family and in protection of the dignity of the human person from the moment of his/her conception. Therefore, the (pseudo) liberating individualism of the "single" thought has led in recent decades to the growth in Europe of a society capable of regarding certain members as "waste". This thought has increasingly eroded the traditional family consisting of: father, mother and children that should be regarded both historically and in the future as the vital cell of our society. The importance of our research consists in proposing to the reader a point of view that is different from the single thought; this alternative perspective allows for the emancipation of women and proposes that they be appreciated for their own mental and physical integrity: body–spirit. It is the intention of this Thesis to show that through honoring this body-spirit integrity in women, we have the opportunity to preserve and promote one of the most precious assets that we have for the progress of society as a whole, and for women as members of that society. Our thesis demonstrates how the aim of the Catholicism, in our postmodern era, is the promotion of the sacredness of the human being in all spheres of society without putting women in opposition to men, but rather, working together with him to build a New Humanism in which the word feminism makes no sense anymore.
