The research of Aşık Veysel folk songs in terms of literacy and prosody

With his poems and compositions, Âşık Veysel is one of the resource people in the folk literature and ashik tradition. In researches which were conducted about Âşık Veysel, it is mentioned that he had a simple and comprehensible language in his works. He was one of the significant ashiks in folk music and had an important position in the culture. After his death, several articles, theses, and books about Âşık Veysel were written by musicians and researchers who benefitted from his works. In this study, the works of Âşık Veysel have been examined through the concept of prosody. Language use has an essential position in music. Also, music is supposed to be in harmony with poem. Lyrics and the compositions are obliged to be written accordingly. This topic in music is analyzed under the concept of prosody which is stated as the harmony of the lyrics and music. Although the search of prosody in folk music has been controversial, the aim of this research is to study the prosody specifically in works of Âşık Veysel. The question of the research, aim of the study, its importance, and related studies have been mentioned in the first chapter of this study. The information of prosody, folk and ashik literature, and about Âşık Veysel is included in the chapter of general description. Materials and methods are written in the third chapter. In the description of the results of the study, the literary framework is studied by identifying the works which are in the TRT Turkish folk music repertory of Âşık Veysel. Âşık Veysel, in total, had 26 works in TRT repertory. While identifying the works in this study, sample works from every rhythm pattern, also known as usuls, have been selected, which were classified according to their rhythmic patterns. The six works of Âşık Veysel have been selected according to their usuls, and studied in terms of literacy and prosody. Keywords: Âşık Veysel, Prosody, Turkish Folk Music.
