Abstract (EN)

As the most watched productions in terms of television content serial present conspicuous consumption practices to the audience with symbols while the representations of women they use contribute to the commodification of women and the contiunity of popular consumption patterns. While the television feeds the visual culture it also influences individuals through the "Fictional World" it presents and makes people adopt popular culture and fast consumption practices that globalization and the technological developments brought with in the changing social structure are presented with certain codes in television series and how these representation of women support the conspicuous consumption patterns through content that appeals to the interests of individuals and discources that commodify the female body. In order to reveal the reproduction of conspicuous consumption practices in television series. The study includes a qualitative content analysis for descriptive purposes of Aşk-ı Memnu which was broadcast between 2008-2010, Ufak Tefek Cinayetler which was broadcast between 2017-2018, and Yasak Elma which started broadcasting in 2018 and still continues. By analyzing the main characters and linguistic, visual and spatial indicators in the series discussed, discourses that create the ideal body perception and direct the individual to conspicuous consumption are emphasized. It has been concluded that television series reflect problematic, prententious, symbolic and hedonistic consumption by using discourses such femininity, beauty, popular culture, physical attractiveness, modernity and fit, foster conspicuous consumption and direct individuals to consumption.
