Supervision practices in high schools according to the opinions of administrators and teachers

The purpose of the study is to research what kind of supervision system needs to be implemented to contribute to the fulfilment of national education objectives in state high schools. Therefore, in the interest of both determining awareness of national education objectives among school principals, who are the supervisor of classes, and teachers, who are in the role of the supervised; and determining by whom the supervision should be done, by which scales and by which method it should be done, their views on class inspection have been obtained. Supervising education is an important practice that reveals whether or not schools are fulfilling their objectives. A qualitative research method, single case embedded-design was used in the study. The study group is composed of School principals and teachers in different branches of state run high schools in the District of Kuşadası in Aydın province. A maximum diversity sampling model was used in determining the study group. Data was collected through the interviewing technique. Interviews were done by asking questions individually to the school principals and teachers with a semi-structured interview questionnaire. The collected data was analyzed and and coded according to the problem status and secondary problems in the research. Significant findings were revealed by creating categories for each theme, and these findings were interpreted through content analysis. As a result of the research, it was observed that the school principals followed different practices in terms of informing the teacher before the audit of their class; the time the principal follows the class during the audit, the duration of their stay, the evaluation criteria, and form of feedback after the audit. School principals were not able to achieve a common standard in class inspections. It was discovered that rather than supporting the professional development of the teachers, the class audits were being done more so to control teachers and therefore were making the audits dysfunctional. It has been determined that another problem experienced in the realization of the objectives of the Ministry of National Education during the inspections is the personal and negative perception of the teachers about the course inspections. Upon observation of all the findings it was revealed that in order to have an ideal class supervision system, it is necessary to first raise awareness about the objectives and principles of the Ministry of Education and to inform teachers about the audit model being applied. School principals and teachers have said that it would be beneficial for a specialist from each branch to accompany the principal during the class inspections.
