Abstract (EN)

The subject of this research is to examine, "The relationships between depression, self-esteem, body image, social appearance anxiety in adults". Sample of the research consisted of 297 male and female adults who reside in Istanbul Province. Data collection tools used in the research are; "Socio-demographic Information Form", "Beck Depression Inventory", "Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale" and "Social Appearance Anxiety Scale". Collected data evaluated by the help of SPSS Software. Methods used in the data collection are; Independent Samples t-test, Anova, Kruskal Wallis h test, Pearson Correlation Analysis, Multiple Linear Regression Analysis and Sobel Test. According to the results, males get higher scores in the body image scale than the females. Young adults get higher scores in Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, Beck Depression Scale and Social Anxiety Scale than young adults. In the same analysis, single participants get higher scores than the married ones. Low-income participants' Beck Depression Scale score is higher than the high-income participants. It is determined that Body Image Scale (β = -.178, t = -3,338, p<.01), Social appearance anxiety scale (β = .190, t = 3,651, p<,01) and Beck Depression Scale (β = .458, t = 8,547, p<,01) scores are statistically significant with Rosenberg Self-Esteem scores. It is found out that when the depression tool assigned as the variable, effect of social appearance anxiety (β=.533; β=.245) over self-esteem decreases (LLCI= 021, ULCI=.036). These results indicate that social appearance anxiety has significantly partial intermediary role on the depression. It is found out that when the depression tool assigned as the variable, effect of body image (β=.551; β=.240) over self-esteem decreases (LLCI= -.019, ULCI=-.036). According to the results, body image has significantly partial intermediary role on the depression. Keywords: Body Image, Depression, Self-Esteem, Social Appearance Anxie
