Are richer countries more democratic? the case of Muslim-majority countries

In this study, the correlation between democracy and economic growth is investigated in the context of forty-six Muslim-majority countries. Although the relationship between democracy and economic variables has been quite popular in the literature, the case of Muslim-majority countries has been rarely studied. Moreover, the existing studies have not yet reached a clear conclusion considering the correlation. I study the time period 1960-2015 because this is the longest time span for which all of the variables of interest to this study are available. A contribution of the study is that data from four different sources that publish democracy indices for the specified time interval and countries are used. By using data from four sources that adopt different definitions of the multi-pronged concept of democracy, this study generates a more detailed and more reliable picture of the link between democracy and income per capita. One democracy index, called V-Dem, has been fairly recently developed and has several advantages over the other indices (Freedom House, Polity IV, and Vanhanen Democracy Indices). To estimate the regression model, the fixed effects model is chosen, since it takes into account the heterogeneity among countries, which is quite high. The results support the hypothesis that in the group of Muslim-majority countries and in the time period 1960-2015; ceteris paribus, the ones that have a higher domestic product per capita are the ones that are more democratic. Keywords: Democracy, economic growth, Muslim-majority countries

Thesis discretions of companions (Sahaba) in emerging issues of internal fighting

Discretions of Companions (Sahaba) in Emerging Issues of Internal Fighting. To explore Companions' Fiqh in emerging issues of internal fighting so this Fiqh can be a reference to rectify many contemporary problems among Muslim parties. Can we extract an integrated doctrinal theory from Companions' Fiqh and discretions regarding emerging issues of internal fighting? Did the events that befall them include all situations? Were their discretions in different incidents inclusive? Are these discretions suitable for dealing with contemporary incidents? The importance of the research is represented in the need of Islamic nation for original Fiqh, related to the first generation, which can address the most serious current problem. That is internal fighting among Muslim communities. 1- Showing incidents of internal fighting in the era of Companions, adapting them and distinguishing between each other. 2- Indicating Companions' discretions in these incidents, relating them to the origins and revealing doctrines of scholars regarding this issue. 3- Preponderance of evidences regarding disagreements among Companions in the light of scholars' views and Islamic schools. In this research, the researcher will follow more than one method such as inductive method which aims at investigating incidents, fatwas and discretions. Besides, the researcher will also follow analysis, deduction and various measuring approaches to reach logical cohesive results. This research is divided into three chapters other than the introduction, preface and conclusion. The first chapter discusses the issue of fighting those who refused to pay Zakat. The second discusses the issue of tribulation (fitnah) fight and fighting party of transgression. The third discusses the issue of fighting Kharijites (Khawarij) 1- Internal fighting among Muslims has provisions which much differs from those of fighting unbelievers. These provisions should be known and taken into consideration if Muslims are tried by such thing. 2- Fitnah fight differs from fighting party of transgression and both differ from fighting Khawarij regarding the origin of provision and detailed secondary provisions. Mixing of these issues is the cause of sever confusion towards contemporary cases. 3- Companions' fatwas and discretions regarding what they experienced are considered as a rich reference which benefits in judging similar incidents.

Kur'an ışığında giyinme ve tesettür

Holistic healing and permaculture: Exploring the role of personal transformation and collective healing in contemporary Islamic permaculture initiatives

While there are numerous studies regarding the role of Muslims in the environmentalism movement as it globally continues to gain momentum, we've witnessed a development of transformative ecology in recent years that has resulted in practical activism through the emergence of Islamic permaculture initiatives in Muslim-majority societies. This study attempts to explore the motivations of 10 founders of permaculture initiatives that incorporate healing from Morocco, Turkey, Tanzania, Jordan, Indonesia, and Egypt. It seeks to understand the role of personal transformation on an individual level, and whether it is a pre-requisite to identifying a collective approach to heal their communities, society and ultimately the Earth. The analysis found that much of the framing around permaculture fits within commonly cited Islamic principles about the environment and an already existing framework of collective healing in Islam and thereby reflects an attempt to understand permaculture not just as an ecological trend but as an invitation to reflect on spiritual concerns and metaphysical issues. It concludes that further research conducted could lead to a larger uptake of permaculture and other sustainable solutions to the climate crisis within Muslim communities globally.

Anti-Muslim racism in Finland: Finnish female muslim converts' experiences on racialization and misrecognition

This thesis explores the experiences of Finnish female Muslim converts on antiMuslim racism, racialization, and misrecognition. The research is rooted in the criticism of the current status quo regarding race relations in Finnish society. The study will thus explore how whiteness as a phenotype and as a socially constructed racial category has been part of the Finnish identity construction throughout history. The experiences of Finnish female Muslim converts on anti-Muslim racism are to be seen as a continuum of the historical "ethnoculturalization" of the Sámi and the Roma and the racism they have faced. The study also considers the Tatar Muslim minority's position in Finnish society, comparing their status as "Finnishized" Muslims to the other Muslim communities, who are by anti-Muslim racist terms defined as racial and cultural Others. The study will also analyze gendered forms of anti-Muslim racism, focusing on the Orientalist stereotype of an "oppressed Muslim woman." The interviews conducted for this thesis will also explore the concept of agency in the converts' narratives of their conversion stories and the Du Boisian doubleconsciousness to analyze how the stereotype is reflected in the female converts' identities as Muslim women in public. Keywords: Anti-Muslim Racism; conversion; misrecognition; racialization; Finnish Muslims; female Muslims.

Homo Sacer: Muslims as outlaws in American political thought

As the United States of America has embraced and defended its right to operate with impunity on a global battlefield, Muslims in particular have found themselves in an increasingly Western-controlled and anti-Muslim world in terms not only spatial but also discursive, with Western intervention not only military but also ideological. Much has been written about the roots of anti-Muslim thought in the civilizational conflict between the Christian and Muslim worlds, or Euro-American racism and xenophobia, but the developments of the American War on Terror deserve a political analysis that measures the systemic impact on the safety of Muslims in the American order, with an eye for opportunities to strengthen their position. Giorgio Agamben’s philosophical work on outlawry and bare life in the Roman figure of homo sacer provide a field for this analysis, of which this thesis focuses on the Muslim American citizen as the Muselmann - he limit figure of humanity - in the global camp. How historical is Agamben's theory, and how contemporary? I argue that Agamben's theory is even more historical than he himself proves, and that Muslims in America, even the citizens among them, are the latest – but also, the most fundamental – example of bare life at the center of America's civil war.

Islamic primary education in the netherlands: Negotiating religious and national values in an era of societal tensions

The large-scale movement of people across national borders in an increasingly globalized and transnational world represents one of the most significant challenges of our modern societies. Over the past decades, European countries, such as the Netherlands, have experienced a great influx of Muslim migrants. This has severely impacted both migrant communities and host societies. Muslim migrants have had to deal with the socio-psychological effects of migration, such as exclusion, marginalization and alienation, while host societies have witnessed a rise of xenophobia, Islamophobia and new rightist populism. In this era of societal tension, Muslim migrants have sometimes struggled to preserve their Islamic religious heritage in societies that are culturally dominated by secular-liberalism. This has initiated an inter-generational process in which Muslim migrants attempt to negotiate religious and national values that, at least at surface level, seem to be diametrically opposed. One of the primary domains were this process of negotiation takes place is education. The Netherlands has a long history of institutionalized Islamic education through laws that support the right to religious freedom. These Islamic schools however operate in a largely secular liberal environment and are legally bound to national secular curricula. In the current social context, the schools are heavily monitored and more often than not accused of being sites for radicalization and anti-integration tendencies. Scholarly research on Islamic education in the Netherlands, which is fairly meager, maintains several far-reaching claims such as lack of engagement and agency on behalf of Muslim parents and a prevalent rejection of Dutch cultural values and norms. It also tends to merely focus on quantitative studies of the educational achievements of first-generation Muslim migrants, which makes the current state-of-the art both limited and outdated. This thesis aims to go beyond mere statistics on educational achievements and focuses instead on the lived experiences of Muslims and the complex process of value negotiation. Based on qualitative-empirical research amongst the newly emerging second-generation of Muslim migrants the author offers new insights into the case of Islamic education in the Netherlands. Contrary to earlier scholarly and popular representations, the Dutch second-generation migrant community emerges as vibrant, well-educated, informed, highly demanding and accommodating of Dutch national values. The Dutch Islamic school, rather than a site of radicalization and anti-integration tendencies, functions as an open and safe space where Muslim students, parents, teachers and school leadership negotiate questions of identity, religious values, and integration into the host society.

Müslüman kadınların deneyimlerinde mekânın ve duyguların rolü: Hanımlar İlim ve Kültür Derneği (HİKDE)

This thesis examines how "Muslim women" in Hanımlar İlim ve Kültür Derneği (HİKDE), which is regarded as a pioneer association in the process of Muslim women's activities in Turkey, define and give meaning to their experiences through the debates of Islamism and the public sphere in Turkey. It is revealed that although their main motivation and reference sources are Islam, women reject "Islamist" discourse attributed to them for the reason they find it political and also believe that their activities have meaning beyond any discourse, hence define themselves as just "Muslim women". This thesis also reveals the meaning and role of space and emotions in the activities of women. It is argued that for Muslim women, being in action which is regarded as a necessity in Islam, requires a space understanding beyond public/private dichotomy. While space is seen as a tool for carrying out their actions, at the same time as a historical madrasa building it corresponds to a representational space where Islamic practices are fulfilled and the understanding of waqf is maintained. In addition, it is claimed that this association is the embodiment form of women's emotions that encompass their actions and play a crucial role together with affective atmosphere that is created through certain objects and subjects. For this thesis, a fieldwork is conducted including in-depth interviews, focus groups, and participant observations. Moreover, the content analysis of the Şadırvan Journal which was published in the first years of the association, and the analysis of other written and visual materials are included.

The context of civil society: Analyzing the Muslim women's participation in the institutionalization process in Turkey

The aim of this thesis is to examine the motivations of Muslim women who established institutions with the definitions of association and foundation in the 1970s in the context of their feelings and beliefs. Many institutions currently defined as civil society organizations have connections with these institutions established by Muslim women in the 1970s. In my study, I argue that both the institutions defined as civil society organizations and those established as associations and foundations in the past are open to different interpretations. It is seen that when the meaning that women attribute to their activities and the institutions they establish is analyzed. When the traces of this interpretation are followed, it is seen that there are similar motivations with the motivation of institutions in the past. The meanings attributed to institutionalization in the 70s can also be attributed to the institutions engaged in activities with the definition of civil society organizations today. Women's motivations are also related to historical experiences, political environment, and vakıf understanding in the past. This motivation enabled women to do activities towards their goals through their emotions. I used multiple data collection methods for the study through in-depth interviews, focus groups, ethnography, and participant observation. In addition, I analyzed written and visual materials, publications and web resources. Fieldwork was carried out in Istanbul. All these data, based on historical trace version and discourse analysis in the field, reveal that similar religious beliefs in Muslim women produce similar emotionality. In this context, veiling, which emerged as the embodiment of religious belief, produced a collective emotional spirit in women and gathered women around a common purpose in the institutionalization process. Due to the state's prohibitions on covering establishment of educational institutions is one of the important stages of institutionalization.

The muslim malay diaspora in Canada: A Case of Muslim agency and global civility

The thesis examines the theoretical framework of transterritoriality and global civil society, and how they are manifested in preformative agency, locally and globally through the ethnographic study of a small groups of a Muslim Malay Canadian diaspora residing in Ontario, Canada. The study explores the negotiations of the normative discourses of tradition and religion in shaping the identities of members of the community in fighting for their recognition as a Muslim Asian minority in Canada. The ethnography suggests that there is a a tug war between adopting transterritorial ideals of global trends yet a need for stability and home making through territoriality. This happens as diasporas redefine their traditions that accompanies them in a new homeland. In addition, to highlighting the role religion plays in grounding the community in the face of cultural ordeals. Thus, introducing through a transmodern theoretical framework, the role the discursive tradition of adab plays in affecting the civil conduct of the diaspora as members of a global civil society.

Current identity crisis in Pakistan; A clash of western interest and national identity discourse

The purpose of this study is to investigate the connection among identity crisis, regional and global power structure. The ultimate instinct of any state around the globe is survival, which is impossible without having a well-integrated society. National identity is one of the inevitable factors, playing the role of keeping people integrated within a nation state. It brings them together in the face of internal and external threats. There is a widespread understanding that, today identity crisis is one of the core problems of Pakistan due to a conflict of preferences between national interests and Western interests. While facing the worst identity crisis in contemporary times, the society, at large, is widely fragmented. The sole notion having the potential to give the essence of unity across different ethnic and linguistic groups in Pakistan is the "Muslim identity" of all varying groups. According to statistical data, the percentage of Muslim population in Pakistan is around 95-98%. Consequently, in Pakistan, the state has been valuing Islam to play the role of keeping the masses integrated and unified, until the 9/11/2001 incident. After the American invasion in Afghanistan, in response to 9/11 attacks, Pakistan, as a state, took a row back from its religion based national discourse giving rise to the problem of identity crisis across the country as well as across the globe. Resultantly, the state has failed to play its role to give a substitute idea of unity to its people rendering a more chaotic environment in external as well as internal affairs of the country.

Muslim perspective on extraterrestrial life

Since antique times, humankind has had ideas on extraterrestrial life. However, only in the last decades, we have been able to search for extraterrestrials via technological equipment. While there are many unknowns about the nature of life, some scientists think that we may find extraterrestrial life. We are looking for biosignatures and technosignatures as the signs of extraterrestrial life. If we find extraterrestrial life, this would have some implications for our place in the universe. Belief in extraterrestrial life implies the mediocrity of humankind. Because Abrahamic religions are understood as they are declaring the uniqueness of humankind, one may surmise that extraterrestrial life would be problematic for religion. However, Islam doesn't seem to claim the uniqueness of humankind. Furthermore, belief in the uniqueness of life seems to be in contrast with some verses in the Quran. Because, Quran has some verses that seem to imply extraterrestrial life, even extraterrestrial intelligence. Since the Quran's implication for the existence of extraterrestrial life is defended here, the scientific opinions on the probability of the emergence of life have significance. However, both low probability and high probability views of life are compatible with Islam. Likewise, there are contrasting opinions among scientists on the emergence of the complexity of life, and both contingency and convergency claims about the complexity of life are compatible with Islam. Finally, the possible religion of extraterrestrial intelligent life needs examination. We may expect extraterrestrials to be revealed by God with the same message of Islam. However, even if we find out that they are not revealed by God, this would also be congruent to Islam.

Islamophobia in Muslim majority countries: A case study of Bangladesh

There is significant literature on Islamophobia particularly, and 'Islamic radicalization' in western countries. Especially a lot of studies and research were conducted regarding Islamophobia in Muslim minority societies like Europe, America, and other parts of the world. However, this is not only a problem in Western countries but a global phenomenon. 'Religious Muslims' in Muslim countries face the same problems or discrimination as Muslims in Western countries or Muslim minority societies. Therefore, to find out the natural causes of these kinds of Islamophobic attitudes, Islamophobia in Muslim majority societies should be examined in detail. From this perspective, this paper will examine why Islamophobia is rising in Bangladesh, although it is the fourth-largest Muslim-populated country. The study consists of five main parts. The first part is an introduction that explains the background of the study. The second part reviews the literature and theoretical perspective. Then, the next part of this study tries to prove Islamophobia in both the public and private sectors. The fourth part discusses and examines the reasons for Islamophobia in Bangladesh. Finally, it discusses the findings in its conclusion part.

Hindistan'da kast sistemi ve Müslüman dalitler

The caste system is one of the most extreme forms of social stratification. When one thinks about the stratification system in the world, India is the first place that springs to mind. Although the Indian caste system is primarily organized into four divisions, there is another group called Dalits that falls outside of this categorization and is regarded as an outcast among all of these castes. While the caste system is associated with Hinduism, Indian Muslim, and Christian Dalit caste groups have emerged in recent centuries after their conversion. The Caste system is supported not just by Hindu holy texts allowing Hindus to practice it, but it has also spread in numerous forms among various religious groups, particularly among Indian Muslims. This thesis examines the caste system and Dalits as represented in Hindu sacred scriptures, as well as contemporary scholars' perspectives on the subject. This study also focuses on Dalit Muslims, who establish Dalit identities after converting to Islam to obtain political, economic, and employment reservations from the government in the same way that Hindu Dalits do. Even though there have been numerous studies on this topic throughout the world, this thesis aims to provide a fresh addition to the field of Religious Studies in Turkey because Dalit Muslims is a subject that has not been studied in depth by Turkish academics. Keywords: Dalit; Dalit Muslims; Indian Caste System; Religious Conversion.

A comparative study of migrant muslim identity in London: Brick Lane by Monica Ali and White Teeth by Zadie Smith

ABSTRACT This thesis is an attempt to study migrant Muslim identities in London: Monica Ali's Brick Lane and Zadie Smith's White Teeth through the lens of Homi K. Bhabha's concepts of 'mimicry', and 'hybridity'. Both novels as a postcolonial literature exhibit cultural hybridity and mimicry, which represents the confused identity of first and second-generation migrant Muslim identities from British earlier colonies. Both novels discussed in this thesis are set in a different borough of London and the characters are migrant Muslims of South Asian diaspora. This study consists of four parts and the first part begins with the background to the authors, a brief explanation of several definitions of key terms and an introduction of theoretical terms, which are essential for analyses of migrant Muslim identities in London. Overall, all of the theory that is discussed in the second chapter is applied to both novels by Monica Ali and Zadie Smith. In the third chapter, it also focuses on multicultural Britain and immigration. It explores the differences between the generations of immigrant identity where they come from. The thesis also analyses how immigrants in both novels define their identity and interact with British identity and the dominant culture surrounding in a metropolitan city whether it changes or empowering their identity. Finally, the thesis deals the relevance of Homi K. Bhabha's perception to comprehend how the Muslim immigrants try to mimic and adopt the dominant British culture with a view to achieving social acknowledgment, but treated as others and inferiors in the society. This thesis will explore issues of migrant Muslim identity through the lenses of mimicry and hybridity that covers the cultural identity, conflict of identity between 'self' and 'other', 'British'-'Bangladeshi', clash of cultures, sense of alienation and ultimate disillusionment of the major characters prevail throughout both novels in the light of Postcolonial critical approaches.

Usüsü't-terbiyyeti'l-hadariyye fi'l-Kur'âni'l-Kerîm

The subject of civilizational education has a great role in the Glorious Koran, because it is concerned with the aspect that prepares the individual and develops his abilities to build civilization according to the principles of the Glorious Koran. Civilizational education is concerned with culture and civil society, as the two sides of civilization. The religious thought is considered to be the source of the emergence of human civilization. Civilization consists of three basic elements: human being, life, and the universe. The civilizational education derives its characteristics from the Glorious Koran. Thus, it is divine, inclusive, comprehensive, moderate, balanced, realistic and gradual education. Furthermore, civilizational education has several foundations such as: intellectual foundations: focusing on the perspective of the Glorious Koran to the universe, the human being, and life. Scientific foundations: which focus on the tools of obtaining knowledge. The doctrinal foundations: which build the correct vision of the reality of what is extant (present). The worshiping foundations, that build the relationship between man and his Creator. The legislative foundations, which include provisions that are derived from the Glorious Koran. The moral foundations, which include human behaviors at the individual and collective levels, and finally, the psychological foundations, that maintain the balance of civilization. These foundations guarantee the creation of civilization anywhere, whenever such principles and foundations apply. Accordingly, the civilizational education in the Glorious Koran has several goals, such as: moral goals that deal with ideas, and the sensory goals which are concerned with the body. In order to obtain both the moral and the sensory goals scientific methods should be followed - which depend on thought and on the humanitarian methods which are accordingly concerned with the individuals. In addition, there are technical methods that run the two previous methods. Thus, civilizational education has several aspects through which education can be applied, for instance, the physical arenas that deal with the sensory aspects of civilization, the moral arenas that focus on ideas and ethics, and the organizational arenas which balance the sensory and moral aspects. Hence, the educational methods that are applied, such as the scientific style, the humanistic style, and the technical style. Then, the civilizational education is subject to certain controls to be able to survive and to solve the civilizational problems. Such controls comprise systematic controls, behavioral controls and regulatory controls.

Kur'an'ın nüzulü döneminde Yahudiler

Yahudilerle ilgili ayetler, surelerin nüzul sıralaması esas alınarak, Mekkî sureler ve Medenî sureler çerçevesinde incelendi. Mekkî surelerde sınırlı yer verilen Yahudilere, Medenî surelerde geniş yer ayrılmıştır. Mekkî surelerde direk hitap yer almazken Medenî surelerde "Ey İsrailoğulları, Ey Ehl-i Kitap" şeklinde muhatap sığası kullanılır. Mekkî surelerde vahiyle ilgili olarak, Kur'an-ı Kerim'in önceki vahiylerle aynı kaynağa dayandığı, Kur'an-ı Kerim'in Tevrat'ı tasdik ettiği bilgileri yer alır. Yahudilerden, Hz. Peygamberle (s.a.v) birçok konuda tartışmaya girmişlerdir.
